I've followed this project since the last boom cycle before the recession and I'm sad that they totally neutered the design of this building.

Yeah, and they switched it up at the last moment. It's a very basic looking tower. Too bulky for that prominent location. It was always going to be bulky, but the older design with the twist (and more height) made it less so than it is now.

I guess it could be seen as boring but like the color/facade (at least from the renderings).

The older design was definitely more interesting but this'll be a nice filler. I guess they just wanted to cut costs? It is kind of a shame.

Foundation Work Making Headway For Moinian’s 3 Hudson Boulevard, In Hudson Yards
Quote:
Situated immediately to the north of Hudson Yards’ first phase, 3 Hudson Boulevard sits at the corner of West 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue. Seen through the crowded perimeter of trailers, trucks, and mechanical equipment, one can get a small glimpse at the amount of progress the site has made since excavation officially began about one year ago. The tower is currently the 14th-tallest skyscraper under construction in New York City, and will rise 53 floors and 940 feet to its rooftop when complete. FXCollaborative is the designer, while the Moinian Group is the developer of the two million square foot project.

3 Hudson Boulevard was previously designed and proposed to be a supertall, standing with a large spire atop a twisting profile. Now, the design shows a much simpler and somewhat shorter envelope, composed of a multi-story podium and the main tower, which will feature a few setbacks on its upper floors along the southern elevation. The foundations are now ready for verticality, with large amounts of rebar pointin upwards at the sky, waiting for the core walls and columns to be formed. There will be an outdoor landscaped terrace on top of the podium, as well as on the flat top of the building.

The progression of buildings rising nearby now includes Bjarke Ingels “Spiral” office tower, the Manhattan West complex, and the expansion of the Jacob Javits Center. All of this is to accommodate a flood of tenants, retailers and the incoming wave of workers, residents and tourists who want to relocate, shop, live, and dine in Manhattan’s newest neighborhood.

Completion of 3 Hudson Boulevard is expected sometime in 2021.

Okay, we're stuck with the booby prize as some would proclaim this to be; but as has been asserted here before regarding proposals, the right materials could make this quite nice.

I also suggest that the second render portion of the tower seems to be a panel ascending above the setback, whereas the first seems not to. This confuses me.
There's a new drawing out here that shoes what I hope will be this panel at a minimal level of enhancement.

Extremely subtle setbacks to the left lead to a flush corner to the right. Sort of a Centrale/138 W50th vibe.

A unified skin design with what looks like metal pin-striping beats the hot mess we saw before.

And there's something with the podium that's not quite flush with the tower either...not a bad thing; 55HY does the same thing pretty much.

I say it's a vast improvement.

i dont care because i didn't like it with the bland fake spiraling either.

but two million square feet is quite a footprint for a now even more of a bland box of a building. and make no mistake, if you have not walked by here, but that plot is just enormous.

so we will get lots of glass and around 10k pfizer worker bee drones plotting and scheming how to rip us off in pharmaceutical costs. or who knows who will end up in there ???

Boring and anonymous, but high quality and classy.

Will fit in well with the other giant towers going up, and will appeal to Park Ave. law and investment firms.

^ no it remains to be seen if its high quality or not. based on the value engineering in the renders its trending cheapskate, but who knows? we will see. what it is is giant floor plates and that is definately appealing for some.
