I just read that Henry Paulson, the treasury secretary, is giving away his 800 million dollar fortune to support, among other things, rails-to-trails efforts and bird habitat conservation.
It's amazing to me that wealthy Americans like Paulson, Gates, etc aren't more into urban preservation efforts in Detroit, Cleveland, or Buffalo and instead devote that kind of money to (relatively) useless causes. You'd think rehabilitation of historic structures would be viewed as an enlightened thing to contribute to.
Maybe it's a baby boomer thing, I dunno. Drop out of society, grow your hair long, move to a cabin in the woods, commune with nature, smoke dope all that.
