Milton is a small town in Sussex County along State Routes 5 and 16, and just a few miles from Route 1. Milton's population is a little over 1500. The town is on the Broadkill River, and was a regional shipbuilding center in the 1800's.
Milton was formerly known as "Head-of-the Broadkill", until being named after English poet John Milton in 1810. Milton was also once known as the "Holly Capital of the World"; the American holly tree, Delaware's state tree, grows in abundance through the state's swamps, marshes, forests, and hills. The holly trees were used to make wreaths, and Milton produced more Christmas wreaths and holly decorations than any other location in the world for some time.
Milton has a small collection of Victorian houses, which sprouted up as the town grew amongst the surrounding farmland.
Milton is nicer than I thought it would be. I was expecting a really boring town like some of the other Sussex County farm towns. Still, I honestly have no reason to spend more than 15 minutes in Milton. It's a nice town to drive through, but not much more.
