Garfield: Another Pittsburgh Hood.

Not one of Pittsburgh's better areas, Garfield is located in the East End. It lies north of Penn Ave., adjacent to the Bloomfield and Friendship neighborhoods. There is a large housing project covering the northern half of the neighborhood.

The locals of Garfield always seem to comment on my epidermis when I have been there.

The Penn Ave. corridor... a business district shared with Friendship, Bloomfield and Lawrenceville (becoming E. Liberty's to the east of Garfield) is seeing some improvement. It's become a major independent art hub... called the Penn Ave. Arts Corridor. http://www.pennavenuearts.org/

Modern Formations, Edge Studio and Attack Theatre are some of the innovative arts venues in the Garfield area. Also, People's Indian Restaurant is rather highly regarded.

This housing/retail development is also new to Garfield's Penn Ave.:

btw, that mural in the background is my favorite Pittsburgh mural (shame on you for not including it, Herodotus )

Despite the Penn Ave. developments, I haven't really noticed much improvement in the rest of the hood... Garfield seems rather generic by Pittsburgh standards anyways.... though I do like those Penn Ave. rows in the last couple pics. I've heard there's a good city view from Fern Ave.

That is a rough looking hood. Not just the abandoned/boarded buildings, but the trash and lack of repair. Thanks for the tour hero.

well well well.. i'm reading "The Bulletin"... which is a neighborhood paper covering Garfield and neighboring hoods... and the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation has built 23 new homes along Broad and Dearborn streets since 2002... with another 8 under construction this year... the small photo shows homes that appear to be large detached (though densely placed) 2 1/2 story homes... most apparently have around 3 bedrooms and are selling in the low 100k range...
