Really neat how you can actually make out the boundaries of the old City of Toronto in this image (particularly the full-sized one in the link) by lighting type. The older areas of the city mostly have "acorn-style" metal-halide lights which produce a white, more natural looking light. New areas and some streets in older areas use sodium vapour lamps which produce the characteristic orange glow of most cities.

EDIT: it says that in the link, I just didn't read it beforehand...

The grid system, while terribly boring as such, surely is impressive seen in situations like this!
We use to play a came with our nieces and nephews asking them to tell us when when ever got to Chicago (there weren't from there). You can see how they knew...the orange lights and tons of them clearly marks one's entrance into Chicago on while driving on the roads between cities. Makes me so homesick!

^^^ One of the best aerial night time shots, even satellite cities like Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Elizabeth etc. are brightly lit. That's in stark contrast to the less densely populated areas of Central Jersey south of Staten Island that appears relatively dark.

I was kind of shocked by how easily you can tell the depopulation of the near and lower eastside. Another notable observation is the linear white lighting of the east-to-west Boston-Edison mansion district on the north end of the city, and at least at night, how Hamtramck just blends into the rest of the urban area.

Washington. You can make out the diamond-shaped border of the District of Columbia based on differing street light standards.
