I's super excited about this new investment firm scouting for qualified white collar workers, I really hope they can find the talent they need here. They say they already have space waiting in the city if all goes well.

We need these types of firms here to help diversify our economy and create jobs for our citizens, especially the ones who had to leave the city for work elsewhere. I'm sure there are many out there that would love to move back here and land a great job.

Hey All

Hello Everyone new member here. I always read the site but never post and thought why not?

Hey does any one know why they just just destoyed the two houses on Lauzon (224 and 226 ?) This property is located next to the hair cutting place and the old Riverside Town Hall.

I also would love to see something go up on the old Edge Water land. If not maybe a temp Park. I heard that Abars bought the land but I do not know how much truth is in it.

Yah just the two houses. People moved out in about a week and they were gone the next.

Well, had they had knocked down all 3 houses my first thought would be they're expanding the plaza, but since the hair cutters still stands that's not happening.

Got my answer

I got my answer regarding the two houses on Lauzon (see below)

The correct addresses in our system are 226 and 230 (as well as 228 behind 230) all of which have properly issued demolition permits. There are no building permit applications for any of these properties. I also checked with the Zoning Coordinator in the Planning Department and have been advised that they have not received any development applications as well. As such the City is unaware of the owner’s intentions for future development at this time. City Administration

Well that sucks.

Update on the new downtown beer store construction

Quote:
Windsor’s Downtown Beer Store on Wyandotte Street East will be moving in the new year once construction of its 6,800 square foot new location is finished.

In just three weeks, foundation and exterior structure has gone up at the new location.

The Beer Store’s current location stands in the way of proposed improvements to the Windsor-Detroit tunnel Plaza and will be demolished in mid-2012.

The new location is on the site of the former Sheldon’s Central Chrysler dealership located at 790 Goyeau kitty-corner to the Windsor Fire and Rescue Headquarters.

An additional 4,800 square feet of retail space will be added in the second phase of construction.

A new plaza on Walker Rd is near completion.

source: http://windsorite.ca/2011/12/new-pla...oad-completed/

Quote:
A $600,000 commercial plaza has been built in the 3800 block of Walker Road.

In recent years, the area on Walker Road south of Cabana has exploded into a shopping area filled with big box and medium size retail outlets. Now that there is no more room to grow out that way, the construction of new shopping plazas is heading down the other side of Walker Road going North.

Back in March, City Council gave approval for an abandoned building materials supply building and its surrounding lands located at 3873 Walker Road to be transformed into a strip mall, with 2 large size units and 6 smaller size.

The existing 11,525 square foot building had sections demolished and a new 4,800 square foot addition added on to give the new plaza a 11,105 square footprint.

It'a about time that part of Walker Rd was redeveloped, it's just so ugly and industrial. It'll be much better once the road is completely redone, which I think is scheduled for thhis year.

I didn't realize how big the University's new engineering building was until I recently saw it on Google Earth.

There are some strange things going on in Google Earth when you view Windsor, you can see half the city with more recently updated pictures (also in a different perspective).

Anyways, here is the new engineering building seen from above and I also circled where the new visitor's centre and parking deck will be going.

Yup, it's really gonna be great for the main campus, it's exactly what the university needed in order to grow and become competative. The new medical and health buildings also have helped the universities reputation as well.

Wickes Bumper

How could anyone in Windsor not know about this eyesore. The old Wickes Bumper site on Tecumseh Rd. E.

I grew up within a 5 minute walk of this place and I always hated looking at it. Good riddance if they can get rid of it!

Quote:
The city is currently seeking expressions of interest for the purchase, demolition, and redevelopment of the former Wickes Windsor Bumper Manufacturing Plant.

The City of Windsor obtained the property on Tecumseh Road East through tax arrears last year. The plant closed in 1990, and has environment risks, with deposits of chromium, copper and nickel being left behind on the site.

Expressions of interest will be accepted by he city until January 31st. There will be a site visit for those interested at Former Wickes Windsor Bumper Manufacturing Plant on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 1pm.

The riverfront stage is nearing completion.

http://windsorite.ca/2012/01/photos-...laza-finished/

The site says it's finished, but some of the photos don't show it being finished, so I'm a bit confused. It looks like they still need to add hand railings for the wheelchair ramp, and finish some interlock brick work where the terrace begins along Riverside @ McDougall.

The concession stand is done

living roof on top of the stage, as well as pictured here on top of the concession stand

Silvia Browne is coming..

I heard that they still have some landscaping work left to do in the spring. This whole riverfront area in the downtown is really going to be stunning when everything is done and starts to green up.

A new update on the Barn!!

Quote:
WINDSOR, Ont. -- Windsorites will get a stunning new downtown retail experience by next Christmas, proponents promise, with plans for a multimillion-dollar conversion of the venerable Windsor Arena into a glass and open-concept "urban mall" destination.

"This is very exciting," said Mayor Eddie Francis. "It brings a modern new retail feel to a core like ours."

The proposal would see a private developer given control of the city-owned Barn by the spring and then invest up to $12 million to transform it into an "urban mall," complete with open-concept farmers' market on the main floor. Concept drawings show the distinctive shape and architectural features of the decades-old hockey arena preserved, but with the exterior walls knocked out in favour of glass and large portions of the roof opened to skylights.

The idea was presented on Monday behind closed doors to city council, which voted to give Eddie the green light to negotiate a deal with King Development of Windsor. The city could either lease or sell the property, said Francis, who was approached several months ago with the proposal.

While the main-floor vendor spots will be open to anyone wanting sales space for farm-related products, Eddie said the development does not represent a replacement for the downtown farmers' market.

"There will be a market component to it, but it's so much more," said Eddie. Year-round tenants, including proposed bakery and butcher shops, will occupy space along the exterior of the new development, which will extend along McDougall Avenue and Wyandotte Street East.

With the casino to the north and an expanded tunnel plaza being developed to the west, Eddie said the development that will continue to carry the name "The Barn," will represent a new gateway to the city.

"We're going to make it so you want to come downtown, and you're going to like it," said James King, whose wife and business partner Leigh Ann are the proponents.

"This is exciting for our us as a community -- it shows we're not stopping, we're continuing to build on new and exciting investments," he said.

Windsorites got a sneak preview of today's announcement when word hit the street a tad prematurely last month (before vital preliminary bits had been put together).

Hot on the heels of this announcement, Eddie said he'll be approaching council in about a month with a proposal for a Downtown Development Corporation to start pushing heavily for new retail investment in the core.

Attracting new retail development in the downtown, like the urban mall, is part of the mayor and council's strategy for revitalization of Windsor's core, and it "allows us to go after the next important piece -- residential," said Eddie.

Read more about the hot new core development in Tuesday's Star.
