pics found by Major Deegan with his comments

Some more great images from in and round the old part of the town.

All images courtesy of Aksal9 from Yandex Fotki.

Svetlanskaya Street

Sailors marching down the Svetlanskaya Street, GUM department store is on the right.

GUM department store on Svetlanskaya st.

GUM. Exterior detail.

Looking up the Ocean Prospect

Fancy floral ornaments at one of the buildings on Ocean Prospect, definately something to drool for if you are a big history junky. More of the bas-relief goodness below the fold:

Elaborate statues of Griffins at the county courthouse building

A stone gryphon guarding the 19th century court building.

Red brick houses line up along the waterfront on the Oceanski Prospect
(Ocean Avenue)

A street scene at the intersection of the Sevtlanskaya and Aleutskaya streets. All that is lacking here is a sparkling canal and some gondola guys... or just some greenery, perhaps...

Tigrovaya Ulitsa (Tiger Street) Vladivostok region is known for rare Amur Tigers that inhabit forests of the Russian Far East, China, and North Korea.

They even had one off the leash in the city:

A beautiful moderne building of the city postal office. Circa 1990.

Pushkin Theatre. Aleksander Pushkin was an renowned 19-century poet/writer in case you didn't know(I thought you might not actually khow ). This one is from 1908.

Zharikovsky Square

This building houses, you guessed it, the United States consulate. I wonder why do they always have to look so meh, and what's with all the security cameras and steel rebar window grilles?

Nativity of the Holy Virgin Russian orthodox cathedral.

The interior of the church boasts intricate turn of the century decorations

St. Paul's Lutheran church

Lutheran church. Detail.

Armenian Apostolic church(circa 1909).

Inspite of the popular beliefe, the Church has much more in common with the Latin rite, than the Eastern Orthodox Churches. For example, their bishops wear mitres almost identical to those of Western bishops. They usually do not use a full iconostasis, but rather a curtain (which was also used in the West at the time of separation).

An old trampy tram dragging itself down the Aleutskaya St. San Francisco anyone?

A more peculiar looking tram Hey, there is a military band playing inside!

Port scene and a fresh load of not-so-fresh Japanese second hand automobiles. Some of them will end up here in Vladivostok, while others will head up to numerous car markets in Western Siberia.

A view of the old town from the docks with some new residential development going up on the top of the scenic hills.

New condo development on Cape Churkin

Vladivostok's very own steel naval personell

C-56 is the Red Army submarine. Apart from the fact it looks very cool, I know nothing about the underwater sailing. I'll leave you to fill in the rest:

One hell of an anchor:

City panorama, Bay Zolotoy Rog(Golden Horn), Cape Churkin, Old Town.

I love how European this city looks, yet it's within a few kilometers of the Chinese and N. Korean borders.

I also love how every American embassy and consulate that I've been to has 5 times the security of every other consulate. Cameras, concrete barriers, metal detectors, etc.

Very beautiful city. How safe is this city for a Western European guy to hang out in?
One of my best friend's girlfriend is from Vlad. It seems awesome.
