I just got a Zeiss 35mm 1.4, and all I can say is wow. It's amazing. I was worried about the whole lack of auto focus thing, but I got acclimated to that in like five minutes. It is an amazing lens, and I have truly been taking some of the best pictures of my life with it. Also, it might now just be my new favorite focal length. The lens is crazy versatile, going from a perfect, almost no abberation architecture lens to a amazingly shallow focus portrait lens with just a small widening of the aperture. Actually, I think I'll post a thread of my pictures with it tomorrow, since I have just been taking so many great ones over the past few days. If I have one issue with the lens, it is that some of the pictures are actually too sharp. It isn't a kind lens to blemishes of the face, if ya know what I mean. Some of my lady friends have not liked this lens as much as I have.

This is for a Sony Alpha I assume?

Is your camera full frame or cropped sensor?

35mm on a 1.5 crop sensor is equivalent to about 50mm, the classic "normal" focal length that most cameras came with back in the day.

I use a 5D MkII, which is a full frame. Also, to the person two posts above, that makes it not a Sony Alpha lens, but a ZE (EF Mount) lens.

Nice, I had the SB-600 but found that I rarely used it, and then after a year it just stopped working, oh well. Hopefully you find more uses for a flash than I did.

I already have the 600 (and umbrellas and stands), so with this one I now have a fairly decent 2 light wireless strobist kit.

The lights are fairly useless for landscape/architectural photography, but are invaluable if you get into portraiture and still life.

Arriving today, my new Canon 35 f/1.4 L. I haven't bought any gear in over a year, so I'm psyched.

Not really though. manual or auto Zeiss is definitely the way to go.

I have a bunch of old Minolta maxxum lenses I want to get rid of, I don't want to waste my time with crap-bay, if anyone is interested let me know. the lenses are all in decent condition and are in working order (I have no idea if these things are worth anything)

70-210mm f 4
28mm f2.8
35-70mm f 4

These should work with a Sony Alpha (I think). Maybe a local camera store will pick them up from you or trade for something else?

I have been considering getting the Nikon/Sigma version of the 35mm f1.4 (I think the Sigma version is a 30mm f1.4), but I'm wondering if it's really such a huge difference between f1.8 and f1.4... That and the fact that manual focus is nearly a necessity for the super shallow depth of field that f1.4 gives you, is it really worth it? For reference, I do have a 50mm f1.8 already.
