But like I said, at least with Apple, all signs are pointing to Raleigh getting it. Apple hasn't denied these reports, so there must be truth to them.

It seems like Raleigh is the favored location, but a couple of things don't add up:
  1. The Washington Post reported Apple has expressed interest in Northern Virgina.
  2. Of all companies, Apple mandates secrecy. If Raleigh and NOVA are in the mix, why would high level city officials be discussing it in public?
  3. I have a good source that said Apple was looking at the Upper Westside. Note, no one from ATL is discussing it in the media - same with Amazon.

1. That report may very well be true about NoVA. But beyond that one WaPo article, nothing else has been mentioned about NoVA with respect to Apple.

2. Apple may be a very secretive company, but did they actually demand it as a condition during their search for this new facility (how do we know?)? Meanwhile, Amazon in comparison been extremely quick to dismiss rumors that have been spread and has forced cities to sign NDAs.

3. I wouldn't doubt that Apple did at least give Atlanta a look. But to be fair, I think it would have leaked out by now (like it has in NC) if it were going to happen here, just like the Facebook Data Center did.

Some people really believe Atlanta is going to get Google, Amazon, and Apple?

I believe two of Amazon's top decision criterion are access to talent and housing affordability. Ranking highly on this list is a huge feather in our cap to landing HQ2.

Atlanta ranks 2nd among Amazon contenders in housing affordability, study finds

https://webcache.googleusercontent.c...nt=firefox-b-1

Quote:
Attom Data Solutions ranks Atlanta’s housing market No. 2 among the 20 cities contending for Amazon’s HQ2, just behind No. 1 Raleigh, N.C.

Ptittsburgh, Pa., Nashville, Tenn. and Austin, Texas fill out the Top 5 in the ranking, which considers such factors as housing affordability, crime rate, schools and property taxes.

The median home price in Atlanta is $220,000, according to the study. Washington, D.C., which ranked 12th of the 20 cities, had a median home price of $520,000.

Well this little nugget is interesting...

https://www.geekwire.com/2018/cities...ax-battle-map/

"The day of the vote, elected officials in cities across the country — including HQ2 contenders Austin, Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Miami — signed an open letter urging the Seattle City Council to move forward with the tax, despite Amazon’s threats."

What do the tea leaves suggest from this?

This is either bad news for Atlanta or it's a consolation prize for DC/NoVa? What's your take?

Neither - Amazon had planned to build another data center in NOVA and reports are they are looking for locations in Atlanta for a data center.

Yes.

I heard from word of mouth that executives were here in Coweta County looking at land about a month or two ago. But things have been quiet since then.

Agree with what's been said. A multi-billion company with multiple divisions does not always make property/personnel decisions as part of a grand strategy. What AWS may need in terms of data center capabilities (and the decisions it makes in terms of location) likely has no impact on or is not impacted by HQ2 decisions.

In other "news." I heard a rumor that Apple canceled future meetings with Atlanta/Georgia about its HQ2 after the fuel tax issue with Delta. No source for this just something I heard. If anyone else has heard anything I wonder if there is some truth behind the rumor.

I agree with what you said with respect to AWS, NOVA and data centers. However, when Amazon signed the lease for brand new, ground up 500K sqft office in the Seaport District of Boston, I think that decision essentially knocked them out of the running for HQ2. Why? First, the Seaport District cannot accommodate an additional 8 Million sqft of office space and the transit in the area is sub-par. I believe if Boston was truly in the running, Amazon would have waited an extra 6 months to make their final HQ2 site selection and incorporate the planned Seaport office into the large HQ2.

Speaking of AWS, I have an interview there tomorrow at 10:00 - Wish me luck.

Best of luck A3000. We need an insider at Amazon. Do it for the forum.
