Smile Freki presents Miami Beach

Visited Florida back in March ( my 4th visit ) and I thought I'd share a couple photos from Miami Beach as a nice place I love walking around
( but man Traffic and parking have gotten worse in recent years )

For more of my photos from around the world I strongly recommend my "Freki presents Planet Earth" thread: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=205617

Thanks for all your pictures of Miami Beach, FREKI!

My gf and I stayed for five nights in Miami Beach just a month ago, but I´m looking for time to post a thread and show all our pictures. It was our second time in Miami Beach, but the forth time for me too.

Enjoyed all your views. We visited the same areas in South Beach as you.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Nice pictures! Interesting how you gravitated towards modern buildings. They get overlooked by the Art Deco. It's a nice way to look for Art Deco elements in the contemporary architecture, too!

Great set Freki I'm jealous coming from San Diego with its comparatively hokey main beach area of Pacific/Mission Beach and its 70's look and height limit of 3 floors... Let me ask you and other forumers, here in San Diego people think if highrises were allowed along the beach it would create some kind of traffic nightmare. Is traffic in Miami Beach a complete crush of autos? From this thread and others it seems to be fine with what 100,000 housing and hotel units packed in to a fairly small strip of land. Why is it that people always equate highrises and density with traffic. Does Miami Beach feel really "crowded"? Thanks.

It was my 4th visit and ( last time was in 2005 ) and while it may have been coincidence I had a LOT harder finding parking spots and traffic was a lot denser ( we actually ended up giving up finding a spot south and parked much further north - why much of the thread covers that )

Again it may have been bad luck on my part, but I never had those problems doing my earlier visist and those were doing spring break too..

The European in me thinks that place screams for a either a subway or elevated metro system - but one could also remove half the intersections on Collins ( blind every other road hitting it ) and make "green wave"..

In any case bring a lot of pathience if driving there and even more if expecting to find a parking spot ( I recommend the parking buildings in connection to Lincoln Road )

Actually there was a elevated system called Baylink that was supposed to connect Miami Beach with downtown Miami that was proposed in 2002 after a sales tax for transit was passed that year. The mayor of Miami Beach Dermer at the time killed the plan saying he didn't want 'undesirables" from the mainland! The plan was supported by the majority of the citizens of Miami Beach.
Now there is a plan to revive it again :

Great photos FREKI. South-east Florida is such a vibrant and growing modern place. It is especially nice for us northerners to visit in the winter months. I haven't been there for a long long time, but I have been following it's growth over the years. Sunny Iles Beach has some awesome skyscrapers now, as well as Miami and Miami Bch, those high-rise building designs (SIB) are really cool.

Just my own personal take... yes it's crowded. Parking can be a problem, especially if you're trying to go to the beach for the day. But then, Miami in general is crowded. Except on weekend and holiday nights, I don't find the traffic to be particularly worse on the beach.

But that's not apples and oranges either. Miami Beach isn't just highrises on the beach; it's shopping, nightlife, dining, residential, sightseeing, and the hundreds of dbags just showing off their ride. It would be crowded without the beach being there.

If the rest of Florida is any indication, highrises on the beach don't cause congestion by themselves. Most sit empty, either used as vacation homes, weekend getaways or investments.

Oh and nice set there Freki. The sun shone bright for you.

( I'm thinking about doing a Key West thread if there's an interest for it?)

So would I mate - but sadly the US seems to be quite conservative regarding beach wear and toplessess

( the good thing about that is that you don't have to feel creepy when photographering - over here it's a freaking minefield - making you feel creepy and limiting what photos you can use online )
