Los Angeles to build world's most expensive stadium complex
By Matthew Ponsford, CNN

(CNN)Los Angeles will welcome the return of NFL football with the construction of a new 80,000-seat stadium complex and "NFL Disney World," expected to become the world's most expensive sports arena.

The 300-acre development in Inglewood, a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, will provide a new home for the NFL's Rams franchise, whose return to their former home city was approved by league officials last Tuesday. The development has an estimated cost of $2.6 billion -- more than $1 billion more than New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, currently the league's most costly venue.

The capacity of the new stadium could exceed 100,000 for special events, say developers. Inglewood Mayor James Butts has already announced ambitions to host the Super Bowl at the arena, which developers say will be the "cornerstone" of a year-round sports, music, and entertainment events district.

An unnamed "owner" is reported in the Los Angeles Times comparing their ambitions for the development to Florida's Disney World theme park. The development's footprint is about twice the size of the original Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and will also host a 6,000-seat performance venue, more than 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space, 2,500 homes, a 300-room hotel, and 25 acres of parks.

The 3.1 million-square-foot multipurpose venue will be the league's largest (in square feet.)

International architecture giant HKS have been contracted to design the venue and have announced that it will center on a 19-acre transparent canopy, which will cover the entire stadium and parts of the surrounding development.

The NFL already claims the world's most expensive stadium. That title belongs to the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, home to New York teams the Giants and Jets, which opened in 2010 at a cost of $1.6 billion. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are also among a minute group of teams worldwide to play in stadiums costing more than $1 billion.

Outside the U.S., stadiums with budgets exceeding $1 billion dollars are rare. London's home of soccer, Wembley Stadium, crossed the mark in 2007. Tokyo abandoned plans for a $2 billion Zaha Hadid-designed stadium last July amid rising costs, with a cheaper design now underway.

IOC President visits Los Angeles and meets LA 2024 candidature leaders

President Bach said during the visit: “You have done a great job in thinking how, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020, you can link your great Olympic legacy with an even greater Olympic future. How you can build this future on the strong foundation you have. You are a strong candidate, and it is a great race of four excellent cities, trying to embrace Olympic Agenda 2020 from very different angles. We now know that wherever the Olympic Games take place in 2024, they will be great Games.”

Mayor Eric Garcetti said: “Our city has changed considerably since we last hosted the Olympics, but our love for the Games remains stronger than ever. If LA has the honour of hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games we will create a new Games for a new era. We are committed to delivering a meaningful legacy, not just for our city, but for the region, the nation and the entire Olympic Movement.

President Bach was accompanied by a group of Olympic gold medallists, including Carl Lewis, Nadia Comaneci, Bart Conner, Allyson Felix, Dawn Harper-Nelson and Janet Evans. University of Southern California

There have been more Trojans in the Olympics than from any other university in the world – if USC were its own nation in the Olympics, it would rank tied for 8th in the world in total gold medals earned. USC’s participation in the Olympics dates back to 1904, when Emil Breitkreutz’06 traveled to St. Louis, becoming the first USC student to compete in the Olympic Games.

All told, USC’s Olympians have won 587 places on Olympic teams, and have taken home 135 gold medals, 87 silver and 65 bronze. As of the 2012 Olympic Games, if USC were a country entering its athletes in the Olympic Games, its 287 all-time Summer Olympics medals would place it 16th among all participating countries. And in six different Olympics, USC’s medal count would have positioned it among the top 10 competing nations.

University of California, Los Angeles

UCLA owns one of the richest Olympic traditions of any University. Overall, UCLA has won 251 all-time Summer Olympics medals - 126 gold, 65 silver and 60 bronze. The Bruins have had at least one competitor in every Olympics since 1920 with one exception (1924), and UCLA has won a gold medal in every Olympics in which the U.S. competed since 1932.

A total of 398 Bruins have combined to make 650 Olympic appearances. The first Bruin Olympian participated in 1920, just one year after the founding of the university - Clyde A. Swendsen was a member of the water polo team.

With 2024 bid in full swing, U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon offers L.A. showcase

LOS ANGELES -- As Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti stood before a crowd outside the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday morning prior to the start of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, he smiled as he looked around at the palm trees lining the streets and the sun-kissed glass façade of the convention center on a picturesque 75-degree day.

"What do you guys think? Do you want to bring the Olympics back to American soil?" Garcetti asked the cheering crowd before the race. "Let's bring it back for a third time! Let's bring the Olympics back home! Let's do it in 2024!"

Whether or not Los Angeles is chosen as the host city, ground will be broken later this year on a nearly $3 billion world-class football stadium in Inglewood, which will be the new home of the Los Angeles Rams, and on a $250 million soccer stadium on the site of the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, which will be the new home of Los Angeles FC, an expansion Major League Soccer team. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will also undergo a nearly $300 million renovation beginning next year. All of the stadiums are expected to be completed by 2019.

In addition to those facilities, over the past three years, the Rose Bowl has undergone a $182 million renovation; UCLA's Pauley Pavilion underwent a $136 million makeover; The Forum got a $100 million facelift, and even new facilities such as the Staples Center and StubHub Center have gotten a combined $25 million worth of upgrades and touchups, maintaining their status as premier homes in the NBA, NHL and MLS.

"We can offer a bid that not only doesn't go into debt, but everything is going to be used long after the Olympics and will already be built before the Olympics," Garcetti told ESPN. "It's all new facilities since the 1984 Olympics with the exception of the Coliseum, which will be upgraded and has the history. We're talking about cutting-edge facilities such as the stadium in Inglewood, which will be the most expensive and most technologically advanced stadium ever built. The Olympics want a more sustainable model for host cities, and Los Angeles is the perfect embodiment of that. More than 85 percent of our venues are already built or will be built regardless of whether we have the Olympics. We are fitting the plan for the Olympic Games to our city, not the other way around."

The LA 2024 bid calls for UCLA's modern residences to serve as its Olympic Village with USC, which is currently building a 15-acre, $700 million mixed-use "University Village" slated to be completed by 2018, as its Media Village. Both schools have also recently built several athletic and training facilities on campus, including the $147 million Galen Center and $70 million John McKay Center at USC, and the $70 million Wasserman Football Center and Mo Ostin Basketball Center at UCLA, which broke ground last year.

"We are so excited that Los Angeles has played host to so many chapters in Olympics history, and we hope to soon write another chapter," Garcetti said. "Los Angeles has the capacity, infrastructure, people and experience to make it happen. We have the strongest package in the world. This is a town that has been home to more Olympic athletes than any place on the face of the Earth."

Los Angeles 2024 today unveiled the official logo and slogan for its candidature to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games back to the United States for the first time in 28 years. On the top floor of the USC Downtown skyscraper, with panoramic views of the City's 2024 Games venues, coastline and mountains as the backdrop, more than 100 Olympians and Paralympians joined bid leaders and civic officials to proudly unveil the LA 2024 logo. The soaring figure of the logo is a symbol of athletes reaching for their dreams, the original Spanish name for Los Angeles "the City of Angels," and the Angeleno spirit of optimism and progress that defines Southern California.

The figure is illuminated, lifted and empowered by the rays of the sun, which emanate from a sparkling point of light at the figure’s heart—a palette of colors often seen in the city sky both at dawn and sunset. The sun itself, which LA calls its brightest star, inspires LA 2024's slogan, Follow the Sun.

As LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said, “Everyday people follow the sun to our city in pursuit of their dreams, spurring unprecedented creativity, innovation and progress. We’re inviting the world to Follow the Sun to California in 2024, to join us in LA for an Olympic and Paralympic Games that signal the dawn of a new era for the Olympic Movement.”

Follow the Sun is also a reference to LA’s year-round sunshine, as well as the “perennial optimism and constant reinvention” that characterize the world’s entertainment capital.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said: “We all know that Los Angeles is a city that breathes Olympism. It’s in our DNA. But this logo is about more than Angelenos’ love for the Games. This logo capture's the essence of LA - a soaring belief that through hard work, creativity and ingenuity, we can follow the sun and reach the highest levels of success. It is with that commitment, that we are excited to continue following our dream of bringing the Games back to a city that loves them.”

LA 2024 committee unveils Athletes Advisory Commission

"We have athletes that choose to live and train here in Los Angeles when they could be living and training somewhere else," Evans, who is the LA 2024 director of athlete relations, told ESPN.com. "[Swimmer] Thiago Pereira, who is Brazilian, [former Romanian gymnast] Nadia [Comaneci] clearly aligns here in the United States, Sarah Attar who runs for Saudi Arabia -- we clearly want to emphasize that athletes do live and train here, and they don't have to be American.

"It's a testament to the facilities we have here -- legacy facilities from the '84 Olympics, our incredible weather, our incredible coaches. The culture that has been built here around sport."

There is a combined 216 Olympic and Paralympic medals, 142 of which are gold, among the American and U.S.-based international athletes who make up the Athletes Advisory Commission. LA 2024 said it will add more athletes to the commission in the coming months.

"I'm supporting L.A., but I'm supporting the Games at the same point," said Pereira, who lives in Santa Monica. "The Games here in L.A. would be a great Games, not only because it's awesome weather and an awesome city, but, more importantly, I believe there is a place for everyone in L.A. This is a city where everyone is welcome."
