The PHD immigrants from India coming here are the exception to the masses of low skilled immigrants.

Have you seen small towns in Illinois or Indiana lately? It's sad how small towns have gone to shit, when I go though them I see tons of addicts with heroin needle marks these days. The opioid crisis is a huge cancer in America, that no one seems to care about. These people aren't becoming the next Elon Musk anytime soon, and are the ones getting on disability in massive numbers in the last 10 years. It's caused by the lack of social mobility in society, where large masses of people feel like they have no future.
You do realize most people don't actually think they will become a billionaire...right? They think they can hit 6 figures or something.

I think that somebody else has the chance to become a billionaire, by inventing something that will make my life easier.

At least, that's what to cool-aid says, I believe.

For a basic income to work it would have to be restricted to adult US citizens to prevent an influx of poor from other countries and the poor here from having lots of kids.

Please don't lump Americans and Canadians together. We are not the same

With the 89,706 immigrants from European countries/territories in 2017, 13,318 (highest of the various European countries/territories listed) were from the U.K.

Outside of BosWash, Americans are exceptionally polite!

But yeah, Canada is basically America Light. America is a strong hoppy IPA with a high alc. content -- served up in a hip dimly lit Edison bulbed bar.

This guy is all over the Canadian forum with this endlessly repeated claim (read: inverted secret fear).

He is some sort of United Empire Loyalist time traveller.

Canadians and Americans are closely related peoples who went two different ways, like Swedes and Danes.

Only Danes don't obsess about not being Swedish all day.

To be fair, the Danes have a far longer independent history to draw an identity from. One that, at times, includes occupation of parts of Sweden.

Still no excuse for the large contingent of Canadians nowadays who are completely insufferable in an international setting.

There are barely any Russian Jews left. Most former Soviet immigrants in U.S., Canada (and obviously Israel) are Jewish. That pipeline is empty.

The number of young people in Russia that want to leave is way up though from a couple of years ago. Old people don't generally leave, because they have roots there and it's harder to learn a new lanuage then. It's the young people who are mobile and want to leave now. Half of Russians between 18-24 want to leave Russia today, in 2014 that percentage was only 20% who wanted to leave. A pretty huge jump in 5 years!

Politeness is often not nice.

It is a means of establishing distance.

Similarly, tolerance (which is often vaunted) is not the same as acceptance.

Yeah, I don't get the "They just think they're gonna be millionaires or billionaires" narrative. Likewise, then the response if "Well if you don't think you're gonna be one, why can't we tax the fuck out of them?" and that's just...bizarre. There's lots of things I don't identify with. That doesn't mean I think we should tax the shit out of them, just cause I'm not them and won't be them in the future.
