These are even better when accompanied by "Across 110th Street."

Indeed. Bobby Womack meant what he was talking about.

Wasn't Rudy Giuliani the catalyst behind most of these changes?

The changes over the last 2 decades has been mindblowing and Harlem continues to thrive and regenerate, much like many parts of NYC.

One of the best threads of the year. Unbelievable. I remember the c. 1988 version of Harlem from my visits during that time. the metamormophosis has been incredible.

From Gotham to New York City. Incredible transformation. Hard to believe that we used to let out great cities get that bad. America really has turned our cities into great places once again.

Really interesting how some blocks have huge changes, and others look almost identical, just cleaned up.

How sad that I missed the period when NYC was at its gritty prime..

I came to Toronto in 1995 from Ukraine but was always fascinated with NYC and its problems and crime, since it was talked about a lot around that period.

It was not until after 2000 when I could make my way to NYC but it was too late then. Now it's all limited to pictures.

Thanks for posting these!!!!

I didn't realize how poor shape it was back then. Look at how many buildings you could have freely just walked in because there was no boards over the doors.

From 2004 to 2007, according to StreetEasy.com, a real estate Web site, the median sale price for the area’s town houses jumped by about 150 percent, to $1.4 million from $554,250. By contrast, the price on the Upper East Side rose by 38 percent. And the volume of sales of town homes in Harlem far outpaced that of any other neighborhood.

What baffles me is that some people want this (depraved, crime-ridden, poor environment (and scary, creepy old Times Square) back.

And what's worse is that some people still think that NY looks like that! Oy!

However, great pictures. I find it kind of funny that a lot of those 80's pictures seem to be taken from a helicopter. I feel for the photographer, I wouldn't want to step foot on those streets back then.
