Is ABIA getting new jetways? Just saw one on a truck at the Del Valle Grocery/Exxon on 71. Not really anyone else who'd be a customer for that around here.

It was one of the nicer glass ones too.

If that is the case...it would be really cool to have glass-sided jetways at ABIA!

I kind of doubt ABIA would be getting new jetways. They just spent several months refurbishing all the existing jetways.

From back in November:

Quote:
Passenger boarding bridge refurbishment has finished on Gate 20. The work includes installing new carpet, sprucing up the exteriors with new paint and signs, and replacing mechanical parts. All 24 boarding bridges will undergo refurbishment by winter 2014. All gates except 19, 22, and 24 have been completed. Work on those will start in December.
As far as I know, the only commercial airport in Texas that has glass-sided jetways is Amarillo.

^^ That's what I thought, about the refurb. So who is it for?

Perhaps in transit, but to where?

^^I have no idea. My guess is that it arrived at the Port of Houston via a cargo ship and it could be headed anywhere. Well... anywhere west of Houston.

Virgin America Expands In Austin
Award-Winning Airline Adds Second Daily Flight between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO, April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Virgin America, the California-based airline that is reinventing air travel, today announces that it will expand its schedule to two daily nonstop roundtrips between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and its home base at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) as of July 8, 2014. Known for inventive amenities like fleetwide WiFi, power outlets and personal touch-screen entertainment platforms at every seat, Virgin America has grown a following of loyal tech-forward guests in the Austin market. The airline first introduced service between the innovation capitals of Austin and San Francisco in May 2013.

"Since entering the Austin market nearly a year ago, we've seen strong demand for our award-winning guest service and business friendly in-flight amenities," said John MacLeod, Virgin America's Senior Vice President of Planning and Sales. "Austin and San Francisco enjoy strong business ties and a cultural affinity –– so expansion on this route makes sense for both our business and leisure guests."

The jetways are probably for Wichita's airport. They voted to buy some earlier this year.

Not my photo. I missed it yesterday by about 20 minutes. We went out to my sister's house in Del Valle and it had already taken off before we got there.

Anyone else notice the Qatar Airways A340 sitting out near the former South Terminal today? I saw it this afternoon when flying in. There did not seem to be anybody working on it...just sitting out there.

A340? Interesting type. What time did it come in? I don't see it on Flightaware.

I see a 744 in there from this morning which no appears to be headed to Argentina.

That must be MotoGP related, since the next race is in Argentina.

Also Suzuki is doing testing at COTA right now. They will also be testing in Argentina.

While I was on the W290 to S35 flyover, I did notice a plane (something shiny moving lol) at the airport, way in the distance. It had to have been pretty large if it caught my attention. Perhaps the a340 you were referring to?

I saw a couple of interesting posts (with some supporting links) over at airliners.net regarding this..

Quote:
Provisional CAA statistics show that 6,762 passengers travelled in both directions between LHR and Austin in March.

The route launched as a five weekly service on Monday 3 March. Assuming 21 return flights between 3 and 31 March, that's an average of 161 passengers per flight. Based on 214 seats a flight that's a load factor of 75%.
http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/80/airport...nal_Routes.pdf

(See page 47)

Someone else posted a site to the U.S Customs and Border Protection website.

http://awt.cbp.gov/

You can select Austin from the drop-down list, enter a date range, and click on "Create Report"

Note he last three columns on the report (Totals, Flights, Booths)

Totals show how many passengers were processed. The flight that arrives mid-morning with not very many passengers is the Aeromar flight from MEX. British Airways flight arrives in the late afternoon, and on the days it operates, AirTran's flight from Cancun arrives in the hour before the BA flight.

Flights show how many flights arrived during 60-minute periods. (It's usually just 1, but occasionally the AirTran flight from Cancun is late and arrives during the same hour as the BA flight from London, so the "Flights" column will show "2" instead of "1."

As an example, see the line for March 30, 2014 between 1500 & 1600 hours. Customs shows 295 passengers on 2 flights.

Then look at March 31, 2014

15 passengers were processed on a flight that arrived between 1000 - 1100 (Aeromar from MEX)

88 passengers were processed on a flight that arrived between 1500 - 1600 (AirTran from Cancun)

165 passengers were processed on a flight that arrived between 1600 - 1700 (British Airways from London)

Booths is the number of booths that were open to process the passengers during a given hour.

The report also gives average wait times and maximum wait times for passengers to be processed by Customs.

Obviously, this report only applies to arriving international passengers. Departing international passengers out of Austin don't clear customs here, they clear customs at their destination.

Hope that all made sense.

Hmm sounds like the Mexico City route may not last much longer. Im betting that a city like Monterrey would be a busier route.

BA route is doing great and should only get busier especially when Summer comes around. It's also just a 1 stop transfer for destinations around the world so a lot of passengers just transfer.
