Those large round junctions are actually out of fashion in most European countries due to their prohibitive cost (the early days of freeway construction were not exactly cost-efficient, just like how north america was building cloverleafs all over the place for a while), the high speeds at which cars swing around the circle and the space used.
Interestingly, as north america builds more and more modern roundabouts with slower speeds and safer entrance and exit rules to replace aging traffic signals and traditional interchanges, the UK in particular is replacing its old, unsafe roundabouts with... traffic lights.
