Special Glass coating

Hi guys,

A friend is working on a school project, involving a smoker's addiction cure center, and wants to know if there is any special kind of coating for glass panels that if interacting with the cigarette smoke, would turn the glass opaque with time. The effect on the glass panels should be visible from outside also.

Do you know of such, or any suggestion where to look for it?

Thank you

Hmmm...not sure of anything like that. I would bet you could just tell them to not clean the windows and eventually they'd just get dirty enough.

Seriously, though, if it's intended to let people know when somebody is smoking in that room, I think I could suggest an option, though it will likely be very expensive.

There is a type of glass called Electrochromatic Glass, or similarly, SPD Glass, that can turn from clear to opaque, or colored, when a current is passed through the glass. I would venture to guess that a system could be designed whereby a smoke detector could detect a person smoking, and rather than setting off an alarm, could signal other equipment to send a current through the glass, thereby turning it opaque until such time that it was reset.

Just my thoughts, not really knowing the intent of the idea.

The idea is that the nicotine addicted people are supposed to be allowed to smoke only inside that room (intentionally) without a proper ventilation, but when having a meal in a nearby open (clean and fresh) air terrace they would be able to see the glass and what effect their smoking has got on it. It's a kind of psychological warfare on them.

Hmmm, interesting...I am sure there is some type of window film one could apply...maybe even just a clear plastic, which again is sure to get nasty enough over time if it is not cleaned. Think the plastic they put on the windshield of NASCAR cars that peel away in layers, which I'd almost imagine you might find from any window tinting company.

I recall a demonstration during DARE when I was in junior high where the teacher did a sort of thing where he had a pump that made a cigarette "inhale" into a plastic bag, where the tar and other goodies collected in a nasty yellowish film, so it does show up pretty nicely on plastic fairly quickly.
