And here's the real render, because you just can't see it enough:

KTVU reported last night that this will be the tallest mixed residential-commercial skyscraper on the West Coast.

I think I found another cousin under construction in Riyadh (although the renderings look quite different):

New derrick at 181, and pile driver. With the addition of this new crane, one at Transbay Tower, and 5-6 at TB Terminal, there are so many cranes in the area (not to mention 2 tower cranes).

They are driving piles? Are there no basement floors? I can't recall a recent tower project that didn't involve some digging.

What about transbay tower? Does anyone know how far they will be digging?

Perhaps it's to drive piles for shoring?

There will be lots of digging, but they may need to shore things up first. This seems like it'll be a complex operation since it's a small footprint and the Transit Center has already been dug out right next door.

Here's what the project docs say:

Quote:
The structure is proposed to be constructed as a steel‐frame building, built atop a mat foundation with approximately 60 steel piles. Excavation for the five basement levels and the foundation would extend to approximately 64 feet below street grade, which is necessary in order to be at the same depth as the adjacent train box, and would require removal of approximately 36,000 cubic yards of soil. The steel piles would extend approximately 150 feet below the bottom of the mat foundation to bedrock.
Quote:
As a result of its location immediately adjacent to the Transit Center, the Project is designed with a foundation that is co-terminous in depth with the train box for the Transit Center (due to structural considerations this foundation can be neither deeper nor more shallow than the train box).
And here is a cross-section:

I'm confused. From the pictures and terminal webcam, it looks like a caisson drill rig and steel tube, not a pile driver.

Soldier piles can be installed via drill rig.

I've been told that TB Tower will require the same extent of digging for the same reason. So it's really no wonder that that alone will take the better half of 12 months (Lumina is about ~4-5? months and counting for a similar sized hole). With 181's footprint, perhaps we can expect a similar timetable of digging/foundation work as 45 Lansing, which took about 2-3 months after they truly commenced and until they erected their crane (~June to ~August).

Could be. I only take pictures and narrate with my limited non-construction background vocabulary; nothing to be taken seriously and as you can see there is vigorous discussion people are having to clarify what's shown in the picture.

This tower is amazing. The SF skyline is going to be unrecognizable by 2020.

No issues with you simms, I really appreciate the photos.

Minesweepers project docs mention steel piles, but I only saw a drill rig, thus the confusion.

Lots of concrete being poured in a hole on the site today. If it is indeed a caisson being filled. This puppy is under construction as well!

When soldier piles are installed via drill rig, concrete is used to keep the piles in place prior to excavation.

Can someone take a pic of the site to determine what is exactly occurring?

Shakman, I follow the construction via the transbay web cam, upper left corner of pic.

http://transbaycenter.org/constructi...mission-camera

They drilled one large hole, lowered a huge rebar cage, poured concrete for a day, and covered it all with dirt a few days ago. The hole was located at the center of the plot. For the last few days I have no clue what is going on. Wish I was there to figure it all out!
