That whole area has some pretty neat-o mid-century architecture by the look of that pic, though.

Hah, I got a John Ascuaga Nugget Scholarship in high school. I think it was a $1000 scholarship and we all got to eat filet mignon at the Nugget in the presence of Mr. Ascuaga. I wonder if he's still alive, this was 15 years ago and he was old then. The Nugget is in downtown Sparks though, not quite suburbia (right by Victorian Square and such).

And don't forget about the Atlantis and Peppermill.

I vaguely recall (I didn't really pay attention to this shit when I was growing up) plans for another casino to the South of the Atlantis that never got built.

Sure, but what constitutes "downtown Sparks?" Almost all of it is either torn down, super-low rise, or parking lots! I've stayed at the Nugget (it hasn't been "John Iscuaga's Nugget" for many, many years) and while the train yards are fascinating, there's nothing of interest whatsoever in "downtown Sparks." Apparently there was once a theater, but no more.

Peppermill and Atlantis are both off South Virginia St., which is sort of their version of the Las Vegas Strip, so they don't seem as completely out of character as the Nugget and the Sierra Grand do, at least to me.

Hmm that movie theater is no longer open? I think I had my first date there .

Victorian Ave, styled as Victorian Square, (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.5348...7i13312!8i6656) is the heart of downtown Sparks. Sure, it's not that much, although it's nice during Farmer's Markets or the Rib Festival.

But yeah, I obviously haven't lived in Reno in 15 years (although I've been back to visit my parents fairly regularly).

And of course there is this sore thumb on Stanford's campus:
https://www.google.com/maps/@37.4282...7i10000!8i5000

Unfortunately, it's slightly shorter than Berkeley's Sather Tower:

But it is girthier!

So I just looked it up and it says "temporarily closed." When we were last there as hotel guests, it was abandoned and I am almost certain I read online (one of my favorite things to do while traveling is immerse myself in local media) that it was closed for good. Not sure what to think now.

I've stayed at the Nugget maybe three times in the last five years (great indoor pool, we usually go around New Years), and there was never anything going on nearby, but we always try. I'm a big fan of the Truckee Meadows area and have always had it on my shortlist of places I would move to if I can line things up right. In summer, we usually stay in downtown Reno so we can dip our feet in the Truckee at the river park. My SF friends always complained when I dragged them down to the river, but now they reluctantly admit it's a fun summer perk after drinking and gambling.

There's a bunch of buildings there, including some of the city's tallest. It's also within City limits and at the dead center of the area's road network (bridges) therefore a high-rise cluster there makes tons of sense.

(Apologies for the low-quality view, but it shows what it's meant to show.)
https://www.google.com/maps/@46.7086...7i16384!8i8192

So, even if it gets built, it won't stick out. Two of the three tallest buildings in the City will be right there.

Not sure if suburban but probably the best example of a 'sore thumb' in Sydney is Blues Point Tower, which from some angles sticks right into the middle of the harbour.

Otherwise here's one at Sydney Olympic Park:

A lot of casinos fall into the Suburban Sore Thumb category when you think about it. The buildings are usually ugly and out of place, surrounding by parking lots or parking garages. The inside is usually a different story and that's why people go to them.

It's in a regional mall/shopping district from the 1980s that has entering the redevelopment life cycle stage. Most of the stores have shuttered in the area. It's a nice looking building about 3 miles outside of Mesa's small downtown with rail connections and about 15-20 miles from Central Phoenix.
Was going to post this when I saw the thread title. You can see this one for miles and miles due to flat terrain and no neighboring buildings of similar size. It is perennially half-leased.

Even if it's half leased, that's still better than most of the other commerical real estate around Fiesta Mall...

Fiesta Mall used to be the premier shopping district for the entire East Valley. I remember my friends referring to the area as next to the "Bug Zapper Building".

The opening of Chandler Fashion Center and Santan Village pretty much killed an inner suburban location that was Fiesta. It's good to see Mesa trying to reinvent the area now though.

Yeah, my family moved to Phoenix (Ahwatukee) in 1996 and Fiesta was THE mall before Chandler Fashion Center. It's been a while since I've found myself near Alma School/Southern but last time I was in that area, it was still pretty dead aside from In-N-Out.

You used to be able to see it from the Elliot/10 intersection back in the day.

Salt Lake is pretty flat once you get out of the actual city. There's a smattering of office mid-rises but nothing that would actually stick out from afar.

The only example I can think of is the Intermountain Medical Center building, located in suburban Murray, Utah:

Hey Comrade, your post made me curious about the height of the IHC building and I tried looking it up. Emporis said it was 158.5 ft, which seemed a little low to me. I couldn't find any other sources.

I blew up a large picture and used some pixel math to estimate that the building is actually somewhere between 216-224 ft tall, which I think makes it the tallest building in Utah outside of downtown SLC.
