If you ever make it there, the feeling will only be reinforced. It's a weird place--definitely not the pristine small-town feel of some of the places posted in this thread, but it has its own charm. I'm going down for a festival in November and am pretty excited.

Probably not worth the trip from out-of-state, but definitely worth it if you're in AZ. It's day-trip-able from Tucson, probably an overnight trip from Phoenix.

I was going to say Woodstock VT is my nomination, on account of being a perfect time capsule. There isn't a single non-heritage building anywhere. Remove the cars (and pavement), and you could think you're ~100 years ago.

(Some buildings may not be actually as old as they look, but you can't really tell; if some are newer, then they were built in very very good imitation of the vintage styles.)

Here's the heart of the village. This street view is from exactly a year ago, and it's been at least 2.5 years since I've been there, so if anyone decides to explore the streets I can't 100% guarantee that there wasn't something new/ugly that was built in the meantime...... (though I really doubt it could have happened.)

^^^^^^ Lio45,

That was a great example of architectural integrity and overall visual interest in Vermont towns and cities. There are many others like that in Vermont and New Hampshire. I think that Nova Scotia probably takes the cake in Canada in the architectural beauty pageant.

I cited Woodstock because it was the only one that I could think of that fell below the 5,000 threshold but it is a classic example of Vermont quaintness. In the winter, they have snow castle competitions in the town square.

Brattleboro, Stowe, St. Johnsbury, Bennington are also cool towns. Also Hanover, Peterborough, Rye and Littleton in NH.

I saw Mackinac Island mentioned a few times, and I have to agree. Population about 500, no cars, history everywhere. Its really touristy, which isn't really my thing, but its definitely an experience.

I'm resurrecting my thread with some suggestions:

Essex, CT (even though it's around 6,000 in the town limits; but there are multiple settlements within the town)
St. Michael's, MD
New Castle, DE
