UAE envoy-designate in Kerala hopeful of boosting cultural ties
Quote:
Abu Dhabi: Jamal Hussain Al Zaabi, the Consul-General designate at the new UAE Consulate General in southern Indian state of Kerala, is hopeful about the prospect of further strengthening cultural ties between India and the UAE.

He expressed his interest in response to a suggestion made by T.P. Seetharam, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE.

At a reception hosted by the ambassador in honour of Al Zaabi on Sunday evening, Seetharam said a diplomatic mission’s function was not limited to issuing visas and similar documents only but involved promoting cultural ties between peoples. “Hope the UAE’s new Consul-General [in Kerala] can promote cultural relations between the UAE and India,” he said.

Asked about the Indian ambassador’s suggestion, Al Zaabi told Gulf News that he was interested in cultural relations. However, he said, he was not in a position to make any official comments about his new role as his appointment had not been officially announced by the UAE Government.

As Gulf News reported on July 5, the UAE is expected to open its new Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, in August. Al Zaabi is expected to fly to Thiruvananthapuram by the end of this month to take up his new role. The senior diplomat was serving as the first secretary at the UAE Embassy in Hanoi in Vietnam.

The UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram will be the UAE’s third diplomatic mission in India after the embassy in New Delhi and the consulate in Mumbai. The opening of the new consulate is a testimony to growing bilateral relations in all sectors.

The India-UAE trade, valued at $180 million (Dh660.6 million) per annum in the 1970s, has grown to around $60 billion (Dh220.2 billion) now, making UAE the third largest trading partner of India for the financial year 2014-15 after China and the US, according to the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, the UAE is the second largest export destination of India with an amount of over $33 billion for the year 2014-15. For the UAE, India was the largest trading partner for the year 2014 with an amount of over $28 billion (non-oil trade).

UAE may open consulate in Trivandrum in August

Quote:
Abu Dhabi: The UAE is expected to open its new consulate in India in the southern state of Kerala in August, Gulf News has learnt.

A senior diplomat has been appointed the first Consul-General at the proposed consulate in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, and he will also take charge next month.

However, the official announcement in this regard will be made by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation later, said a senior official at the ministry who did not want to be named.

The UAE has expressed its plan to open a consulate in Kerala in 2011, following a request from the Indian government and initiated by the Government of Kerala. Of the 2.6 million Indians, who constitute the largest expatriate community in the UAE, Keralites make up the largest community group. Although no official data is available, almost 50 per cent of the Indian expatriates in the UAE are said to be Keralites.

T.P. Seetharam, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, welcomed the opening of the UAE Consulate in Kerala. He said the new diplomatic mission will help south Indians to get their UAE visa and other documents easily.

“This will improve people-to-people relations,” Seetharam said.

Yusuf Ali M.A., chairman of LuLu Group, and vice-chairman of NORKA-ROOTS, a Kerala government institution for non-resident Keralites, said the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram would help all stakeholders, in multiple areas, such as travel and tourism, medical and health care, employment and recruitment, investment and trade relations.

“In my capacity as the vice-chairman of NORKA-ROOTS, I will extend all my support to the new Consul-General and work towards the socioeconomic development of both countries,” he said.

UK students to learn Indian culture
Quote:
Thiruvananthapuram: The British Council has launched an exchange programme for students from the UK to study in India.
A group of 500 students will arrive in the country and 50 among them will be joining the University of Kerala for a two-week-long course in Indian Studies. The syllabus will be prepared by the faculty attached with the University of Kerala.
"After considering the research opportunities at the University of Kerala, the programme will be launched. It will be a short-term course on Indian culture and studies. It will be a great opportunity for students in their career to get an international exposure and to understand and connect with the Indian culture," said Alan Gemmell, director of British Council India.
Gemmell also held a meeting with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding a partnership programme to support English language education in 300 students in the state. In the programme, the British Council will provide training to students to improve their skills in English and help them in getting employment after their graduation. British Council has conducted an Advanced Placement (AP) test for 40,000 students from across the country to participate in the training programme.
British Council has also come up with the largest-ever student exchange programme in the country for 2017. A total of 500 students will be given scholarship to study in Britain, which is the largest ever number of scholarships issued by the council for the student exchange programme.
The programme is funded by Newton fund, an initiative of the UK government to fund research after the announcement of UK-India Year of Culture during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to London in November 2015. It will be conducted in partnership with universities in Britain.
"The number of scholarship will be awarded as part of the Year of Culture celebration. The aim is to highlight the cultural history of the two countries and celebrate, reconnect and aspire the relationship," Gemmell said.
British Council will organise a fair from November in which British universities will participate to collaborate student exchange programme.
