THUNDER BAY

Thunder Bay's OCS store will be located in the strip mall in front of the Superstore on the Harbour Expressway. There are a couple vacant units in the building. Based on LCBO design specs, the fit-up for the store should be quite substantial. Sounds like most of the design work & drawings still need to be completed, so construction is a little ways off yet.

THUNDER BAY

The province of Ontario has announced that ReGen Med of Thunder Bay will be Ontario's tissue storage bank for the entire province. The new designation will require an approximately $10 million renovation of their current lab space.

Work has begun for renovations to Westgate High School to accommodate students coming over from the soon-to-be-closed Churchill High School. The new elementary school to be built on the Churchill site has finally gone to tender.

May Street beer store. (It looks weird because it's behind dirty glass and it was dim and foggy this morning when I walked by.)

Montana's restaurant is going to be renovated inside & out over the summer. A new patio area has already been built.

Copperfin Credit Union will be renovating their Algoma St. location this summer. It will be the last local branch to be brought up to their current design.

The structural steel is just about all up for the new Subaru dealership on the Harbour Expressway.

The lot at Secord and John where a new small apartment building is going to be built has been fenced off. Should see construction there soon. Sounds like the same individual is looking to build a four-plex further up towards the Italian Hall as well.

A significant number of renovations are scheduled for pretty well every Lakehead Elementary School this summer, as well as several reno's to buildings at L.U.

There is still a lot of work to be completed. October is possible, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that change.

=====================

A small addition will be going on to the Harbour-Carrick Centre at Carrick and the Harbour Expressway. Likely has to do with the new OCS outlet to be opened there.

There are plans for a 3 unit commercial building at the Thunder Bay Mall (Arthur St. W.) by the LCBO. There is currently some planning issues being debated between the city, the developer and area residents though that is slowing things. Sounds like the development would include a restaurant, a fast food outlet with a drive-thru and one other unit.

A smaller subdivision was approved recently for the 20th Sideroad area, south of Nova Dr. The plans call for 24 lots on two new streets.

Maley Drive extension running a $4M surplus

https://www.sudbury.com/local-news/m...surplus-958587

A major road project in Sudbury is actually under budget. They may do part of the next phase with this surplus.

Now that’s a first.

Assuming $4M budget surplus holds, section from Barrydowne to Lansing will have four-lanes

City councillors approved plans Tuesday to use a $4 million surplus in the $80.1 million Maley Drive extension project to four-lane more of Maley, commonly viewed as the worst roadway in Greater Sudbury.

The work would only be done if the $4 million surplus isn't eaten up by unexpected costs, project manager Dave Shelsted told council. Assuming it does, the section of Maley between Barrydowne Road and Lansing Avenue would be four-laned, and a roundabout would be installed at the corner of Lansing and Maley.

Maley Drive needs a complete re-engineering, not just a repaving.

The roadway sits on a swamp. Back in the day, it was created by dumping gravel and tar chip on it.

If the city goes cheap, the road surface will simply fall apart again.

That is why they are spending the spare $4 million on Barrydowne to Lansing.

Nor-Ont Resources has narrowed the selection process for their proposed ferrochrome processing facility down to Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins. Thunder Bay and Sudbury were dropped from the running.

While it is disappointing news for Thunder Bay & Sudbury, one must keep in mind this project is much too large for one single community in Northern Ontario to supply all labour and inputs for the project. It is very likely Thunder Bay & Sudbury will be called on for mine site labour and their respective service & supply sectors. At the end of the day, the benefits will reach all 4 major centres that were in the running if/when this project ever gets off the ground.

Nakina Forest Products is set to re-open.

THUNDER BAY

Some site prep work is underway at the Thunder Bay Mall on W. Arthur in front of Movati Athletic for new retail space. Scotiabank will very likely also be building a new branch on the southwest corner of the parking lot closer to Canadian Tire.

The addition to the small strip mall in front of Superstore on the Harbour Expressway is well underway. The addition will help accommodate the new OCS store coming to T-Bay.

With the new mental health wing open at the main St. Joe's Hospital site, the province is now beginning the process of declaring the former LPH site surplus. Other levels of government get the first crack at the building, and then it goes for sale to the rest of the world.

OPG and IESO have agreed to decommission and demolish TBGS, after significant corrosion was found on its boiler. The plant operates for only 2 to 5 days per year and is the most expensive generating station to operate on a cost per MW basis in the province.

https://www.tbnewswatch.com/local-ne...-closed-998237

While the plant is a significant contributor to the city's economy through both property taxes and its payroll, the plant costs OPG over $40 million per year to operate despite not generating any electricity. It will take several years to demolish the facility and remediate the area. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, becomes of that land.

As a Power Engineer, I heard about this one and how it is basically a retirement job.
