L.A.-based hub will help create factory sensors

Los Angeles will become the headquarters for a federally funded institute devoted to developing sensors that make manufacturing more efficient.

President Obama announced the project, which will receive $140 million in public and private funding, Monday at the SelectUSA summit in Washington, D.C.

A consortium of researchers in Los Angeles will coordinate the work of five regional centers — one at UCLA and outposts in Texas, New York, Washington and North Carolina. Dozens of companies across the country will participate and invest in the initiative, including Google, Microsoft and Northrop Grumman.

California Passes France As World's 6th-Largest Economy

California is now the sixth-largest economy in the world, surpassing France, thanks to a robust state economy and strong U.S. dollar.

California was the world’s eighth-largest economy in 2014, Irena Asmundson, chief economist of the California Department of Finance, said in a phone interview on Friday. “California did exceptionally well in 2015.”

California is home to diverse strong economies, including Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Manufacturing and agriculture have performed well despite a severe drought, Asmundson said.

California has outpaced the rest of the country on job growth, California’s finance department said in its June bulletin this week. Gross state product was $2.46 trillion in 2015, with 4.1% of growth in real terms, it added.

It’s official. Bottega Louie is opening its second location in West Hollywood, and with David Cooley as a partner.

In a press release today, Cooley, best known for opening The Abbey 25 years ago, said he will be a partner in the WeHo Bottega Louie. “I have been approached many times about partnering on this space but none of them felt right,” he said. “A globally known culinary destination like Bottega Louie is the perfect addition to Santa Monica Boulevard.”

Earlier this year Cooley acquired Here Lounge, adjacent to The Abbey, and work is underway to convert it to “The Chapel,” at part of The Abbey.

Revived Forum's dominance of L.A. concert business likely to continue

It’s only been two years since the Forum was resurrected in Inglewood, but the famed music venue has quickly grabbed a sizable chunk of the Los Angeles-area concert business.

The revived 17,500-seat oval-shaped hall boasted 20 concerts in the L.A. area during the first half of 2016, accounting for 36% of arena concerts here, the Forum said Wednesday.

CSUSB Palm Desert Campus to Expand

That is if a master plan unveiled by the university is approved by the board of trustees. "We are planning to build out for eight-thousand students, including resident halls some more classroom buildings, some administrative offices and some athletic fields, it's going to be like a real campus here very shortly," campus dean Sharon Brown-Welty said. If approved, the campus would be so big, it would allow the university to support and additional 7,000 full-time students.

Some of the new features will include a library, student housing, at least nine more academic buildings, athletic fields and so much more. The expansion is all in an effort to establish California State University, Palm Desert as an independent Cal State University campus. "The goal is that this university is the first choice for our Coachella Valley students, when they are considering a four-year university,” Brown-Welty said. University officials are hoping that having a campus in the valley can attract more students to stay in the valley to get their education," she added.

Carson might get outlet mall on land once eyed for NFL stadium

The City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday night to begin exclusive negotiations with Macerich Real Estate Co. to develop a portion of the 157-acre site alongside the 405 Freeway. This is the second time in four years the city has entered into an agreement for a freeway-facing outlet mall on the property that stretches from Del Amo to Avalon boulevards.

The Santa Monica company wants to erect a 500,000-square-foot outlet center with 150 high-end stores that would take up a fourth of the site. Macerich promised to front the city $1 million to cover fees for preparing the documents to pass over control of the land, and $250,000 of that is slated to go into the city’s community nonprofit fund.

The city hopes the momentum from the project will entice developers to build out the rest of the property, though it isn’t yet clear when construction will begin, and the deal could potentially fall through again — though Macerich has already invested about $2 million in its initial studies of the site, according to the city.

The proposed development, called the Alla Road Creative Campus, would consist of a trio of two-story buildings near the western terminus of the Marina Freeway. Plans call for approximately 155,000 square feet of office space, in addition to a one-acre outdoor courtyard and a parking garage for 600 vehicles.

Continental and Mar Ventures are marketing the proposed campus as an extension of the creative office boom in nearby Playa Vista, which is now home to companies such as Google and Yahoo. The two companies have previously collaborated on a number of projects in the South Bay, including the 15-acre Elevon complex in El Segundo.

Rams to inform fans they've sold out season tickets, will begin selling single-game tickets

Those deposit holders were contacted in waves on a first-come, first-served basis, and roughly 24,000 of them bought the entire allotment of 70,000 tickets. By the time the franchise got through the first six hours of deposits, the season tickets were gone.

“To sell out of season tickets in the first six hours upon our return to Los Angeles is both humbling and a reminder of how excited Angelinos are about the return of the Rams and the NFL,” Kevin Demoff, Rams chief operating officer, said in an email to The Times. “As both Los Angeles’ first pro sports team and its newest sports team, the bond between this team and the community is evident and strengthening each day.”

This week, the Rams will begin selling single-game tickets, making those available first to the deposit holders on the list who have yet to be contacted, again in the order they placed their deposits earlier this year.
