The parking garage in the foreground is the most interesting thing in this picture.

Seems like the kind of place Chevy Chase would take his family on vacation. I dub this the ugly side of town. They look like urinal cakes smell. I hear some of the homeless are packing up and moving to a classier part of town. Hopefully they can add more poles and wires to help cover these up. The view from the approach from the north going south on I35 now officially sucks. Norman, Oklahoma wants their iconic landmark hotels back. Architects misread Austin's slogan thinking it said Keep Austin Bland. They looked at the better designs in other cities and said, F#*k Austin. They would make good halfway houses for mental patients that are used to these type of institutional buildings. I can see somewhere down the road turning these buildings into a large more appealing surface parking lot. I wonder if Sears still sells aluminum siding, it sure did wonders for our barn back in the 70s. Maybe they will have some extraordinary lighting at night, may I suggest aiming the lights away from the structure as to blind us and give us some nightime relief. These buildings are so boring to look at that I may just use a picture of them on my screen saver to help ween me off sleeping pills. San Antonians are NOT jealous of these additions to our skyline. When I look at these, it reminds me of the Chevy Vega and the Ford Pinto. I now redub this area the poverty designed section of town.

I heard that Arch and the Salvation Army are thinking of moving already because their guests are complaining about the views.

An unbroken wall of mediocrity.

I guess you go forward with the hotels you're given rather than the ones you might want or wish to have at a later time.

It's a StubbyHotelVille with all these being grouped together.

You know if they continued the terra cotta striping on the H.I.Express especially on the gray areas and surrounding the pool, this building would only be mostly bland instead of entirely bland. Since they used poverty cladding, it can still be painted as were some of the hotels north of the Capitol Plaza on I35. In my constant effort to find something positive about all this, it is kinda cool how these are cut into the hill there. Pretty sure the only thing that can seriously improve that bland stubby cluster is to add a taller glass tower where the parking lot and poverty garage sits. Since they are on top of the hill 15 - 18 floors ought to do.

They should just go ahead and put this up where the parking lot and poverty garage sits - or else at the Salvation Army ARCH if/when they move.
That way they they can keep the color scheme going that they have in this part of town and that whole area can just scream "Hip! Trendy! Funky! Upscale! Affluent!"

We can call it the "Lifestyle Hotel District." Throw in a little ground floor retail (preferably a day spa and a juice bar) because Austin can never have enough
day spas and juice bars."

Any ground floor retail in the "Lifestyle Hotel District" should include a nail salon, bail bonds and Boost Mobile.

I tried several color schemes basically using the existing color palette, this is the best of the few I tried, sadly, it still sucks.

That is the best looking Motel 6 I've ever seen.

But alas, we will likely only get a Motel 5 1/2.

A+

Might I add a shady looking Western Union and a generic chinese place with low quality food billboards plastered over the windows.

Murphy's Law says Choice Hotels will get in on the action, corner the market, and buy Block 70. The church lot will be transformed into a park of multiple brands from their portfolio. I'm talking about a 3-5 story Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, and to take advantage of the unrestricted CVC section, a 12-story Econo Lodge (8-stories of parking, and 4 stories of units. Slogan: "Bringing roadside downtown"

Too bad they tore down that old 1938 house at 804 Neches:

That could have been where the restaurant went in, although I would have voted for it to be a pizza place. They could have called it Buratti's - named after Santos D. Burratti who originally built the house and then rented it to his son, Chester while Chester was attending UT.

Historic Landmark Commission - 804 Neches Street

You can see the lot where the house used to stand in the lower right hand corner of the below photo where that grey car is parked on the street.

I don't recall any project being proposed for the site of that house and the adjacent parking lot to the west of it. Prime location for yet another budget hotel maybe?
