Conversion: Delta Centre-Ville > Evo Square Victoria

The Delta Centre-Ville Hotel on University Street is closing on October 31st. As far as I know, the building, which is approximately 105 meters high, has been sold to an undisclosed buyer who is not expected to operate it as a hotel. Does anyone have updates on this or any guesses concerning the future of the building?

They announced their plan to transform it into student residences a while ago.

What I find more mysterious is the sale of the Hilton Bonaventure across the street. Are they gonna turn that into a student rez as well?

I don't really see the Hilton Bonaventure being transformed into students residences... I also find odd to hear that two big hotel chains are closing in Montreal.

Delta has another location on President Kennedy, so the brand is still present here. Campus Crest, an American private student residence company, purchased the Delta Centre-Ville from a franchisee rather than the chain itself. (The chain actually seemed shocked that this happened)

Hilton wouldn't close the only "Hilton" brand hotel in Montreal, unless a brand new one is built. Is the Hilton Bonaventure a franchise as well? (or a corporate run one?)

Anyways, here's the info on it from when the purchase occured:

Campus Crest buys Delta Centre-Ville hotel
U.S. company to convert property into student housing

By Oshrat Carmiel, Bloomberg News July 9, 2013

Campus Crest Communities Inc., a publicly traded owner of U.S. college housing, made its first international acquisition by buying a Montreal property for conversion into a residential tower for students.

In a joint venture with private-equity firm Beaumont Partners SA, Campus Crest acquired the Delta Centre-Ville hotel in downtown Montreal for about $60 million, Chief Executive Officer Ted W. Rollins said. Charlotte, North Carolina-based Campus Crest will have a 20 percent stake in the partnership, which expects to get financing later this year for the redevelopment.

“The numbers are very compelling,” Rollins said in a telephone interview. “There are 80,000 students within walking distance to the property.”

The 33-story property has 711 hotel rooms and is close to McGill University, Concordia University and Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Rollins said. Redeveloped as student housing, the property may have as many as 1,300 beds as well as a library, study rooms and a conference center for university-sponsored events. The conversion is scheduled for completion by the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Ths is actually a pretty good idea! I wonder what they are going to do with the big glassy octogon at the top... Convert it to a study room maybe?

should do something to improve the street life along that stretch of university and into victoria square. would be nice if there was some serious external renovation as well, but i'm guessing that's not too likely.

It's a bit too far for most students, it would have been better off as executive furnished apartments. ETS is close enough, but by and large it's not an upscale student body (at least not as much as McGill).

But being part of the underground (RÉSO) is a ++.

This just screams weird to me. Why would they pick this Delta over the one that's literally a block away from McGill (besides the obvious and likely answer that the owners of the Sherbrooke Street franchise refused to sell)? I really don't know how successful this will be, particularly if they're priced fairly high. Then again, McGill Residences do fill up...
