Chicago - Howell and Hood

2013

The feed lines are very small and (supposedly) are flushed every evening, the whole apparatus is quite a bit more complex than you would think

nice. i think oregon actually has a state law about regularly cleaning feed lines/taps. it's important for fresh beer.

wow that howell place looks pretty cool, but there is a lot of common beer on those taps.

i'll take quality craft beer taps over quantity of taps anyday.

this is what i'm talking about -- my favorite neighborhood craft beer joints:

They just opened this in my city.

http://www.taphuys.nl/

24 beers and 14 wines on self tap. 80 beers in bottle.

While it seems like fun to visit once or twice, like those places with 50, 70 or 100 beers on tap, it's a bit gimmicky.

I prefer the smaller places that really care about offering good beer and have a knowledgable staff. Luckily there are a lot of such places in this part of the world.

In my city:

Kandinsky
8 beers on tap, over 200 in total.
http://www.biercafe-kandinsky.nl/

Burgemeester Jansen
15 beers on tap, over 100 in total
http://www.burgemeesterjansen.nl/

The Red Baron in Burton, MI (literally across the street from Flint) has 51 beers on tap according to their website. Most of them are Michigan craft brews. Their prices are pretty good, too.

University of Beer in Sacramento has 100 taps (location in Davis too), with many local brews to sample among them; http://uobsac.com/

Not my go-to place, but thread title said...

Sac (along with LA I now know) has it's own original Der Biergarten, with a great outdoor vibe and great beer selection; http://beergardensacramento.com/

Freshness is very important for draft beer. That's why most "craft beer" bars tend to have only a few beers on tap and then a monster selection of bottles. But just as important: it doesn't seem feasible to have bartenders sample every single beer when you have so many on tap. I'd much rather go to a place with 10-15 high quality beers of various styles on tap.

Ultimately, it comes down to this: do you want to go to a place with a million beers on tap but the staff is clueless about most of them? Or would you prefer a bar with only a handful of carefully curated beers that the staff can speak knowledgeably about each one?

Because of the large number of awesome beers available these days, choosing which beers to fill a limited number of draft lines is far more challenging than just adding more taps.

I find in the places with a million taps I'm only ever really interested in 15-20 anyways. Usually from their "rotating selection". It's also important to talk to the person who does the beer ordering as they actually tend to know more about it. Sometimes servers barely know the names.

When I've been at one I've found that generally you'll have 10 or so macro brews for those who want it. Even if the rest are all craft (or macro owned craft in lots of cases) it tends to be the standard Goose Island, Lagunitas, Brooklyn, Stone, etc. Not that those breweries don't make good beer but it's not super interesting all the time. It sure fills up space on a menu though!

This is suppose to be a fun thread.

Is it too late to change the (just for fun) rules of the game?

What's the bar with the most taps in your city?
What's your favorite bar (and beer) in your city?
What's your local?

For all three posts a pic.

What's your favorite bar (and beer) in your city

In Atlanta it's probably Taco Mac Metropolis, which has 140 beers on tap.

But I definitely agree with some other posters that quality is much more important than quantity. If you're in Atlanta, hit up Hop City at Krog Street Market, Brick Store in Decatur, or the Porter in Little Five Points.

Yardhouse in San Diego (and other locations) has 125 beers on tap:

For a smaller selection, I prefer Hamilton's in South Park

You don't want to overwhelm people with choices, otherwise it become Cheesecake Factory. I'd rather have a curated selection. The more sizable, the better but only up to a point.
