L.A.'s Population Tops 4 Million for the First Time

From the LA Weekly:

Thanks, Millennials: L.A.'s Population Tops 4 Million for the First Time

By Dennis Romero

TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2016 AT 6:02 A.M.

If it's feeling a little more crowded around here, you can likely thank your nearest millennial.

For the first time, government officials are estimating that the city of Los Angeles' population has surpassed 4 million.

The county, with 10,241,335, remains above the 10 million mark, the state Department of Finance said this week.

The department's population report, based on estimates for January, contains preliminary figures. Still, it's an eye-opener, pointing to increased density in California's largest city and to the probability that millennial residents are fueling urban growth.

The city of L.A.'s 1.3 percent expansion was the largest among the Golden State's 10 biggest cities, the Department of Finance report found.

Demographer Dowell Myers of USC's Sol Price School of Public Policy says that with Mexican immigration at a standstill and families on the decrease in Los Angeles, the growth spurt here points to millennial workers who enjoy dense, downtown-style accommodations.

"We've been losing Latinos and kids," Myers said. "So this increase in population is not due to immigration at all. It's due to millennials and jobs."

[...]

Read the rest here.

Per the finance report, California grew by .9 percent in 2015. I believe it; I still often see out-of-state license plates where I live, and I know that the drivers are not just visiting; they've been parking their cars in my neighborhood for months---and I report them to the CHP through their website, out-of-state registration cheaters. When you move to California, you only have 20 days to register your vehicle without paying penalties. California loses millions of dollars a year in revenue due to residents who unlawfully register their vehicles in other states. I've reported cars with plates from Wyoming, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Illinois, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, New York... all within the last year.

I have a theory that that NIMBY article was actually written by Jill Stewart, who is the director of the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative.

By city and state agency measurements LA already hit that milestone, but not officially recognized by the Census.

Are there any particular neighborhoods where much of this growth is occuring?

A GIS map with % growth would be neat to see.

I think like NY, it was under counted. I just don't buy that in 2000, it was 3.7 million. and it took a decade to gain 92k residents. Not for Los Angeles which in general, is an economic powerhouse and a city for immigration. I trust the state estimates over census data period. Even for NYC, it was vastly under counted.

The content of the article isn't, but the title is pretty snarky. LA Weekly has a deserved reputation as a champion of NIMBY causes. It's former editor is currently working on stopping all large developments in Hollywood.

Obviously anecdotal, but it just seems as those there has been a huge population increase over the last few years. Employment is up, the city is denser and there is a shit load of construction going on, but its a tangible difference. Also, id be shocked if LA city wasnt undercounted by at least 10%

At least 10%? What makes you think we've hit basically 4.5 million? That's an enormous difference.

Good. I think a measure of a healthy city is if it is attracting the young, artistic and talented professionals. Working across the street from one of the USCIS support centers in this city I find it hard to believe that immigration is slowing down... perhaps from Mexico but it is crazy how many people go in and out of that place every day.

From Latin America immigration has probably slowed, but from Asia it's probably never been higher. McMansions are still spreading here like tumors.

Don't have any stats on me, but I can look.
