Land/Water area coincidences

Is it completely coincidence that Los Angeles and New York have nearly identical area? Sure, NYC has a lot more water area. But how is it that the two largest cities in the US have almost identical combined land/water area?

New York:
Area
• Total 468.484 sq mi (1,213.37 km2)

Los Angeles
Area
• Land 468.67 sq mi (1,213.8 km2)

Another interesting coincidence I've noticed being from Michigan but living in Oregon is that the city with the highest percentage of blacks has nearly identical land area as the city with the highest percentage of whites (of major cities):

Detroit:

Area
• City 142.89 sq mi (370.08 km2)
• Land 138.72 sq mi (359.27 km2)
• Water 4.17 sq mi (10.81 km2)
• Density 4,852.42/sq mi (1,873.54/km2)

Portland:
Area
• City 145 sq mi (376 km2)
• Land 133 sq mi (346 km2)
• Water 12 sq mi (30 km2)
• Density 4,504.2/sq mi (1,737/km2)

Got any other strange ones?

Cincinnati and Cleveland are almost the exact same geographic size.

Cincinnati: 77.94 sq miles (land)
Cleveland: 77.70 sq miles (land)

Cleveland also has 4.7 sq miles of water, compared to just 1.6 sq miles for Cincy, but I've always thought it was interesting that both cities are basically the exact same size, despite radically different development patterns.

Columbus, by contrast, is a whopping 217 square miles.

speaking of Columbus, OH, it has roughly the same land area as Columbus, GA.

of course, the former is over 4x as populous.

Columbus, OH - 217.2 sq. miles - 892,533 people
Columbus, GA - 216.4 sq. miles - 194,160 people

interesting comparison between Boise and Chicago:

Boise is the exact same distance from Chicago as Chicago is from Boise.

weird, eh?

Detroit (142.89 sq. mi.)
Philadephia (142.7 sq. mi.)

The two cities have nearly the exact same total area, and very similar land area (Detroit: 138.72 sq. mi. vs Phil.: 134.28 sq. mi.). The two cities also peaked in the same decade (1950) very close in population to each other (Detroit: 1.85M vs Phil.: 2.07M).
