Despite the obvious similarity, I was dubious considering the pictured ship (involved in terrestrial transport) was said to have been at the '32 Olympics, predating the '36 Serial. To be clear the comic strip began in '28.

Look at my post again. The "towed" ship was most probably part of a homecoming parade and not related to the Tenth Olympiad. (In other words, I am agreeing with you.)

There were probably several models used in the series. Some with cockpit windows, some without. Just ask Emperor Ming! (At your own peril.)

Oh, no I wasn't trying contradict you about dates, I was merely trying to clarify which ships were which in the movie series.

The ship being towed in the Colosseum is Dr. Zarkov's ship, which took the good Doctor, Flash, and Dale to the planet Mongo.

The ship without the "ammunition belt" detail around its midsection belongs to Ming the Merciless and/or his minions.

If I didn't attempt to clarify that, they would take away my Flash Gordon decoder ring :-)

I have a slight 'connection' to Flash Gordon.

Remember the tacky 1980s movie? Sam Jones, the actor who played Flash, lived in my bungalow on Hancock Ave before I did.
(actually, there was a tenant in-between, a bodybuilder that might have been a hustler)

Many times I would have people knock on my door looking for one or the other.

Yes, ER....thanks for asking. George was looking for sort of out of the way historical places to take photos. One pic was that famous cut through the solid rock. The other is a monument in the hills [both below and have been seen on NLA]. Since that photo in 1984, during the Olympics Week you mentioned, the bronze plaques have been stolen off the rock monument by vandals. So much crime in that area.

Cops? That was another day for taking historical photos in the SF Valley area. I don't have photos of that day. I looked through all of George's photos after he passed away
and did not find those pics. I think his roommate made them disappear.

This Seaver Center photo is currently undated and titled "Los Angeles Business Building." However, there are two clues that
tell us this is a c. 1908 photo of 500-506 W. Temple and The Nesta aka the Nesta Hotel (the hotel entrance is at the far right):

Clue #1: The building at the left edge of the photo is the Beth Israel Synagogue at 227 N. Olive:

I see that HossC was quick with an ID of this location. The cut though the hill is right at the end of the street I grew up on, my house was about a block to the east. I decided to ride my bike down that graded area to the right of the cut, my bike tire hit a rock and my head hit the same rock splitting my eyelid open. We kids did lots of exploring around that freeway construction.

P.S. As you can see, I'm catching up to y'all.

Louise Denker was the widow of Andrew Denker, an early real estate developer who died in 1892... among the properties Denker and his brother-in-law Henry Hammel had acquired was the Rancho Rodoe de las Aguas, which of course turned into Beverly Hills... despite her connection to BH and that she would have been able to observe its early residential development as well as that of other Wilshire-corridor tracts, Louise built a house out on Adams Street (3820 West Adams was completed in 1913, designed by Cooper Corbett).... The Adams corridor was still competitive in 1913, but even before the Depression it would begin losing its appeal with the affluent. Unlike many West Adams houses, however, 3820 still stands—apparently it even still had its original furnishing until sometime in the '90s.

That would be Beal's Cut in Newhall near the Newhall pass. Yeah, the plaques have been missing for some years. There's some interesting history around that area.
