I've lived on the right side, right on the inlet, and currently live in the cluster of towers on the left. This photo is a few years old - there's been a huge construction boom lately.

Downtown Vancouver is just off the shot to the left.

When I fly over the Bay Area, particularly at night, I am struck by how it really covers about the same amount of ground that L. A. does, only there's a huge body of water in the middle of it.
