Those are awesome. I was trying to pick a favourite, but couldn't. They're all amazing. Maybe the first one from NK with the skyline in the distance.

When was the last time the rail bridge was connected? Is the middle part turned like that to keep scofflaws from crossing the river?

it's been that way as long as I can remember.

But yes, to prevent trespassers. Likely for liability reasons and just general safety. Who owns that bridge, the City or CP?

I believe the bridge is privately owned and it was turned to permit navigation at the time. Nowadays nothing on the river would require it to be open so it just sits that way.

That line (Bergen Cutoff) has an interesting bit of history. It was built as a CP Rail bypass around the City of Winnipeg, literally 100 years before the modern-day discussion about getting rails out of the heart of the city. It was part of a grandiose plan that called for the construction of the North Transcona Yards, which were slated to be one of the biggest railyards/shops in the world at the time.

The North Transcona Yards were partially built and remain in existence today, but the Bergen Cutoff itself was abandoned sometime around World War II with most traces of it having been eliminated over the years. The only remaining signs of it west of Lagimodiere are the bridge over the Red River, as well as a line of trees that marks the old right of way. The reasons why it was regarded as necessary but then ended up never really being used much, if at all by CP are not clear to me... it's something that has to my knowledge never really caught the attention of local historians .

I though it had to do with the land for the proposed North Transcona Yards. If i remember that is the area of the tall elevator that still sits on the site that tilted after construction due to poor soil conditions. It was one of those wonders of engineering that they managed to right the massive concrete structure.

I thought the soil conditions had something to do with the yards not going there.....again this is all just foggy memories and I could be totally wrong.

That was my understanding of the situation.

Just for fun I googled the Bergen Cutoff, and lo and behold the Manitoba Cooperator ran a very insightful article about it last summer.

https://www.manitobacooperator.ca/co...en-grain-line/

Looks like a combination of factors including the Panama Canal, the Great Depression, growth in Vancouver as a destination for grain exports and, yes, soil conditions did the route and the railyards in.

I suppose that in the eyes of rail line relocation advocates, the Bergen Cutoff was about a hundred years ahead of its time.

The elevator tip is 'the' example in geotechnical engineering. Everyone knows about it and learns from it. Amazing they righted the elevator with locomotives and horses. Also amazing the building stayed together!
