Cameras I own:

Nikkormat FTN (2 bodies (black), 4 lenses, innumerable lense filters etc--both mine are in much better shape than the ones pictured here by the way)

Leica CL

Leica C-1

Canon Powershot S100

Canon Powershot SD550

These days, almost all the pictures I shoot or am likely to post here are taken with the SD550.

Since I mostly just take tourist snapshots these days, my only real need is for a compact camera I can put in a pocket and not have to have hanging around my neck making me look like a tourist. The SD550 does the job. I doubt I'll ever buy a digital SLR though I may upgrade to a point & shoot with image stabilization.

Heh, a vote for 35mm point-and-shoot.

Again, I am amazed by the number of people with digital SLRs. I remember when only one or two members had them. I wonder if it would still be the dominant category if this thread was in the Skybar. The people who look at General Photography are probably more likely than the general SSP population to have advanced cameras.

I guess I should have voted for 35mm SLR as well as Digital SLR, because I do also have a Canon Rebel 2000 body. I never got around to selling it, and after I started getting some good lenses, I decided to keep it since it can also use them. I've used it for some ultra wide-angle stuff with my 17-40mm (since it doesn't get the full 17mm field-of-view on my 20D), but I exposed about 3/4 of the roll before I decided not to bring that camera with me to Europe. I'll be back in California later this month, so I really should finish and develop that film!

Hmmm... I had a Sony DSC H1. The pics I posted here were taken with this camera....its life was prematurely ended when I dropped it and broke it.....
Now I just use a cannon P&S.

Nikon FA film SLR
Panasonic DMC-FZ20.

I still prefer the good old Nikon film camera. Fuji Reala negative film is hard to beat.

I'll endorse that statement 100 percent. After Kodak dropped the Royal Gold 100, I tried various films. When I started using Reala 100, I wondered how I'd missed it before! Fine grain, excellent color without over-saturation, very sharp, and scans beautifully.

A month ago or so, I bought a Nikon D200 with the 18-200mm VR lens, and I'm deeply in love with it.

^It happens. But it's an object. It's wrong to love an object. Although, someone will probably have to pry my D50 (which isn't nearly the camera the 200 is) out of my cold dead hands.

Depends on what my goals are for photos that day. I sell pics on a couple of stock sites, so if that's my objective for the day I use my Canon XT or Sony R1. I just recently picked up a Nikon D40 as a "carry around" DSLR as I found it for a discount via someone who owns a store I know, and I've found it to take really good shots (though it has some lens choice limitations).

I currently have an old Nikon FG-20 SLR from 1980 which is an absolutely lovely camera. Just the basics, F-Stop, Shutter Speed, ISO, Focus, and the likes, but basically stripped down to nothing. The best part about it is it was pre-computers so everything is mechanical and I don't have to worry about batteries or any of that stuff.

Here's the beauty:

I am in the process of shopping for a new DSLR, which I have narrowed down to either a Nikon D-40x or a Sony a-100. I have heard rave reviews of the A-100, but Nikon just has such great reputation and I love the signature tone their pictures have. Its a tough decision.

If it's between the two you listed, you may wish to consider the Nikon. The Sony Alpha is a good camera, but varied reviews do point out some quirkiness with the metering and noise (grain) issues at higher isos when compared to other models.

Remember, the Nikon D40 and D40x do not have the lens motor "stem" on the mount, though. If you want a lens to autofocus you need to use the AFS or AFI lenses. Older lenses will work, but you'll have to manually focus them. That D40 I picked up surprised me (in a good way) so the D40x no doubt is equal to that plus you get a bit more resolution.

Well, other than the battery to operate the lightmeter.

I'll be getting back to this poll in a couple of weeks when I have my D40 in my hands...

EDIT: Okay, I need a second opinion here. I've been looking at just getting the D40 Body (if I can find a place that just sells those) and then picking up a "Tamron AF 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 DiII LD Aspherical (IF)" Lens (whew, that's one hell of a name). Anyone have much experience with Tamrons?

Apparently it has 13.9X zoom power...

I recently picked up a lens like the one above for next to nothing and I've been using it quite a bit on my D50 (manual of course).
