Oregon Convention Center Hotel topping off

Quote:
Last Friday, hundreds of construction workers from 28 different trades gathered to celebrate the end of the vertical rise of the Hyatt Regency Portland with a customary topping off. This summer, craftsmen and women endured 100+ degrees of heat while pouring concrete, raising the hotel floor by floor. As the rain descended on Portland that morning, it was a foreshadowing of the weather to come and all appreciated the move into the finishing work which takes place indoors and out of the elements.

Still a year from completion, the convention center hotel is spurring big business
By Jon Bell – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal
an hour ago

For years, one of the biggest arguments for building a huge hotel at the Oregon Convention Center was that it would help draw new conventions — and all the business that comes with them — to Portland.

The Hyatt Regency at the Oregon Convention Center, the 600-room hotel that's currently under construction across from the convention center, appears to be doing that already, even though it's still a year away from completion.

According to information from Metro provided by Mortenson, the developer on the project, the 600-room hotel is already exceeding booking estimates. In the first year the hotel's inventory came available for future bookings, Travel Portland saw a 43 percent bump in Oregon Convention Center group nights booked across all Portland hotels compared to the year prior.

It amazes me this took so long to get done when we are already seeing the instant benefits of why this should have been built years ago.

We just have alot ....

... of nay-sayers. We, as a state, have fallen behind our progressive neighbors to our North and South. But hopefully, we can grow up and also keep our sense of place (Native OR here and am getting ticked off at the amount of litter and lack of "Oregon Values"/caring for the environment).

Convention center headquarters hotel?

Does this count as a "Convention center headquarters hotel":

"... the result that billions of dollars of public investment have produced mostly meager economic results."

But I don't know what numbers they pull for that. Cities I have watched add convention hotels with public assistance have not regretted it. Austin, Dallas, Nashville, Denver have all built a starter headquarters hotel. In the years following, with the increase in large conventions, privately funded hotels have sprung up all around their convention center to capitalize on the increased business.

Like any business sector, there will always be winners and losers in the ultimate goal for more market share and the assumption that if u build it, they will come is a gamble. In Portland.s case, it has always been an under achiever in the Convention business due to lack of facilities. A 43 percent bump in Oregon Convention Center group nights booked across all Portland hotels compared to the year prior is only a one number sample. It will be interesting to see 5 and 10 year benchmarks......

Convention Center hotel takes shape

Doors won't open for more than a year, but rooms at the Hyatt Regency Portland are already in demand.

Even though the Hyatt Regency Portland hotel near the Oregon Convention Center is a work in progress, the project already is already attracting attention in Portland — and beyond.

Inside the 14-story project, some of the 600 guest rooms are taking shape. A grand ballroom, while still relatively bare, provides a sense of the size of the space. Meanwhile, in a restaurant kitchen area, shiny surfaces are evident.

There were times when many thought the convention center hotel would never happen. Even as the project began moving forward after years of discussion and debate, a group of hotel owners filed a lawsuit, claiming a decision by Metro regional government to use lodging taxes to subsidize construction of the hotel should be referred to voters. The issue was headed for the Oregon Supreme Court, when Metro and the group in 2016 agreed in a settlement to drop all lawsuits, clearing the path for construction of the Hyatt Regency Portland to begin in 2017.

The hotel isn't slated to open until February 2020. But many say it's already having a local impact, from helping efforts to build a much-needed skilled construction workforce to the promise of boosting tourism dollars spent in the city.

Long-awaited Hyatt Regency hotel by Oregon Convention Center opens today
Updated 10:04 AM;Today 6:00 AM
By The Oregonian/OregonLive Politics Team

Hyatt Hotels will unveil its newest hotel in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center on Thursday.

Officials broke ground on the 600-room Hyatt Regency in 2017 after decades of stops and starts on the plan for an anchor hotel -- part of the urban renewal plan for the area since 1989.

With its original $224 million price tag, the Lloyd District hotel was one of the largest at the time. It also included public funding – about $60 million in revenue bonds backed by lodging taxes paid by hotel guests throughout the city, $10 million in state lottery funds and $4 million from the regional government Metro, which runs the convention center.

I was in the Lloyd District on Tuesday afternoon so stopped in to see the new Hyatt Regency. The interiors were pretty forgettable, to be honest. It was also really quiet - easily more staff than there were visitors. I'm sure that will change over time though.

Mayer/Reed's redesign of the OCC plaza looked quite nice. When the weather is nice I can imagine the terraced landscape area being quite well used.
