IMHO, this might have been the biggest missed opportunity of the design. Seemed like a neat way to incorporate some sort of green roof here.

More ambition could have even turned it into an expanded activity area that could attract locals as well. By example, lawn bowling in downtown Minneapolis has been a long-time attraction...

You know the more I look at the roof from the east, the more I'm beginning not to like it. I don't know, I guess I was expecting it end up different than how it actually looks. From the west, it looks great the way the wood like facade rises up above the glass, but it just seems odd to me from the east. Seems like something more should be there. Does anybody know if they will have a JW Marriott brand fixture somewhere at the top? I think just having something like that would make it look better.

I believe "J W Marriott" will be on the east side at the top.

^^ Very sleek and modern, nice. ^^. I thought they were painting the penthouse beige? Hopefully the black is just the exposed weatherproofing.

While I really like the way this turned out, I can't say that I like the way it looks from the angle on the last pick. It looks unfinished since they didn't extend the cement lattace topper all the way to the north side of the building. Guess I'll have to close my eyes when I'm driving south on 35 until I see its better side if it bothers me too much...
Funny how that little BOA signage on top of the BOA building really enhances the look of that building for me.
And even though the Westin is not going to be that tall, really like the placement and the impact it will have overall, looks like positive density infill, same with the Colorado tower. Also have to say that I like all the different angles of the metal roofline of the building in the foreground.

Wow, I guess the take away is that it's relatively easy to get into the JW Marriott site! I would have figured security had tightened a bit these days.

But I can't say I blame anyone for doing that. Me and my friends did the very same thing back in the 80's in Dallas... during the height of their building boom. It was easy to get in to those under construction towers, even during the day! The workers sort of just laughed at us. Never thought to lug a camera up there back then... too bad.

Seen a ton of incredible pictures from the roof and crane of this building. Austin has a huge sort of underground urbex scene for going into these construction sites, one of the weirder results of the skyscraper boom.

JW Marriott moves up opening date to February

By Gary Dinges
American-Statesman Staff

With construction continuing to run ahead of schedule, downtown Austin’s new 1,000-room JW Marriott hotel has again pushed forward its opening date.

The 34-story, 1,012-room convention hotel, at East Second Street and Congress Avenue, is now set to welcome its first guests Feb. 13, Indiana-based developer White Lodging said Wednesday. When completed, the facility will be the city’s largest hotel.

I just hope the city does not allow commercial signage, (hotels excepted) at the top of buildings in Austin. That would be hideous. Does anyone know about the signage rules.

The JW does blend the new blue glass look to that '80s brown about as well as possible.
