Upgrading the FW Gardens and making it code compliant would be such a huge, complicated task that the cost of going new would be similar.
To my understanding, the last bit of grandfathering expired on January 1st, so the next time any work is needed, the accessibility work has to be done. Given that the future use assessment recommended essentially hollowing it out and building a new arena inside, it could easily run into eight figures.

Work is now underway on Wacky Wings.

Hydro One is developing a helicopter hangar at the Thunder Bay Airport on Derek Burney Dr. Should see construction a little later in the season. Not a huge building, but it is a good sign for Thunder Bay given the amount of power line infrastructure that is going to be coming on-line in the next decade or so.

Sounds like the second 12 plex unit on Algoma will be going up soon. It will be located next to the one that went up last year of course.

Part 1 update of projects in Sault Ste. Marie.
Commercial stores under construction at Second Line (Hwy 17) and Pine Street. In 2012 this was the site for two six floor apartment buildings, I guess that changed in the past few years.

Flying J's service Centre located on Great Northern Road (Hwy 17) between Third Line and Fourth Line. This replaces the Husky North truck stop that was demolished in 2014.

New 64 luxury townhouse subdivision on Dacey Road just south of Chambers Avenue.

The old St. Veronica School on East Balfour in the west end of the city will be converted into apartments. Interior work has begun on the back of the building.

West Side Manor Townhouses on Vivian Avenue completed March 2016.

Korah Apartments on Second Line West completed November 2015.

Dentist office on Great Northern Road across from the Cambrian Mall.

Apartment Building at 101 Victor Grondin Way just off of Trunk Road (Hwy 17).

Interior work underway on the Pulp tower at Mill Square. Will be completed at the end of May next year and will house a farmer's market and the museum of nature.

Completed work of the old administrative building which now houses the Algoma Conservatory of Music.

Work is finishing up on the small canal that once brought fresh water to the Paper Mill here 100 years ago. This is now the only visible section of it.

Pictures by me.

Part 2 update on projects in Sault Ste. Marie.

International Bridge Plaza at Huron Street and Queen Street West.

Brewery Block at Bay and Spring Street. Those structures will remain at the top of the site. So far all that has been decided is a parking lot on the south half of the site for OLG and city employees. Hopefully what they build on the north end of the site will make up for it.

Uusi Koti at the Finnish Rest Home. located on North Street just north of Second Line.

Riverwalk Condo's Phase 2. Will be 4 floors when completed.

Riverwalk Condo's Phase 3. Will start interior renovations after phase two is complete.

Riverwalk Condo's Phase 1. Should be completed by the end of summer this year.

Pictures by me.

Toppers Pizza (a pizza chain from Sudbury) is opening up in Thunder Bay in the near future. They will be located in the former Mac's store at Arthur and Edward. The place definitely has to be cleaned up and equipped first.

Also heard that Brewer's Retail is exploring options for their Thunder Bay warehouse. Brewer's is the warehousing and logistics side of The Beer Store. Apparently the local warehouse is significantly over-capacity all the time, and cannot handle the amount of product that goes through the city.

Piles are going to be driven across from Intercity soon for the new retail development there.

This going to leave a significant hole along Cumberland that could lead to a complete redevelopment of the Shoreline Hotel, especially if the Event Centre actually goes forward.

THIS would be a hotel development that would be contingent on the building of the Event Centre... not the Delta. At least the Media Peanut Gallery would have that on their side.

Downtown Volkswagon has applied for a zoning amendment which would allow for the development of the vacant lands at the south-west corner of Central and Golf Links. If approved, a new Volkswagon dealership and service centre will be constructed on the above mentioned lands.

Balmoral St. reconstruction from the floodway to Carrick St. begins after the long weekend. The thoroughfare should look significantly different when construction is complete late this year.

Whats with our city council ? I think they like to jump the gun with news .
Months ago Hobbs said a major manufacturing plant was about to set up shop here in Thunder Bay ? Nothing said since .
Then his hype about Costco , that seems dead to.
A huge call center setting up shop, that dead to ???

On a different note and just an observation . You hear from time to time that city wishes traffic would use 11/17 to come into town rather than turning down hwy 102 ( especially trucks ) . Well for people who don't know the town , there is only 1 sign and it directs you down hwy 102 . I think the city would would attract more people to come down into the Arthur st area and maybe it might be better for spending .But no sign stating Thunder Bay that direction.
Likewise coming from the other direction , it says turn here for downtown at Hodder exit . I think it would make more sense going down Habour Expressway and not as run down looking . Just my opinion .

Balmoral Street is being repaved from the Floodway to Hewitson. Next year, Hewitson to Alloy including Habour Expressway rebuilt, and then the year after that from Alloy to Beverly.

The city's wayfinding options along the highways are limited, because the MTO severely restricts what those signs say and what they point to.

New affordable housing building to replace a downtown garage. It's being built next to the Diplomat motel which is also being converted to affordable housing units.

The mayor indicated to Acadia Broadcasting today that the Costco proposal to develop in Thunder Bay is still alive and well. The city apparently has an agreement in principle to sell a piece of land to a developer, which would be home to a Costco. Retailers undertake extensive market studies before constructing new stores, a process that has only gotten more onerous after Target's Canadian failure. If outside financing is involved on the part of the developer, it becomes even more complicated.

XVI Global Solutions never guaranteed they would set up shop in the city. They came and surveyed the local labour market during the winter. They don't typically release the information they gather since their competitors could use it. This could be dead for a lack of available workforce, or the company could be proceeding through the steps required to lease the space and set up shop. Too early to tell yet.

Manufacturing plant... who knows again. Those things remain very confidential. Huge time involvement again before things actually happen.

======

Heard that Halfway Motors may be putting on an addition to their dealership on Memorial Ave.

Construction of the new athletic facilities at Confederation College has begun. Build time is approximately one year in duration. I'm not sure on the exact size of the building, but it is a decent size. The new building will replace the existing 'bubble'. Piles are being driven at the moment for the foundation.

I also believe foundation work has begun for the Maltese Grocery expansion. This project has been years in the making.

A couple new restaurant chains are wanting to come to Thunder Bay. Both are seeking franchisees to operate their brand. Mr. Mike's has advertised a restaurant opportunity near Port Arthur Stadium and B.P. on Memorial Ave. This new restaurant is part of Mr. Mike's aggressive eastward expansion from B.C. Milestones would like to build in the new retail development across from Intercity Mall on Fort William Rd.

Hi,

Just wondering if construction has started on the waterfront hotel. They were supposed to start in July. Would be nice to see that project get off the ground!
