Growing Up: Visualizing the future of Toronto

by: Alyshah Hasham

One in the Star’s ongoing Growing Up series about growth and density in Toronto.

Behold the Toronto skyline of the future.

With the click of a mouse, Cale Vanderveen swoops through the Yonge St. canyon. With another, he pivots around the CN Tower, past the top of the proposed casino complex.

The 17-year-old high school student from Uxbridge is demonstrating a 3D model of the downtown core he built on his laptop using SketchUp, free 3D modeling software formerly owned by Google.

The proposed buildings are constructed in SketchUp and placed in a model of present-day Toronto from Google Earth. The result is an interactive 3D model that shows just about every future structure currently in the works, from the newly announced Gehry-Mirvish towers to those well under construction, each building colour-coded to show its stage of development.

I finished adding the rest of the major Toronto towers, except for the 1 Yonge complex, still have no idea what that's going to look like:

I've been working on a Toronto future skyline pic and even though it isn't complete yet I think it's good enough now to share.
So far I have added (or finished off) One Bloor, Ice East & West, Harbour Plaza East & West, L Tower, 88 Scott, Ernst & Young Tower, Casa II, U Condos I & II, 1 York, Karma, FIVE, Southcore Delta Hotel, Theatre Park, RCMI, Waterpark Place 3, Bisha Hotel, Southcore Bremner, Pinnacle on Adelaide, The Bond, Alto, Studio on Richmond and Quartz.
Still lots more to add, and these are only the buildings that are U/C. I'll make another with all the big proposals added in as well, one of these days.

What's that building ~150m tall south of Delta Hotel?

it's the office building being built beside the Delta, the perspective just looks a little off.

Here is the next Future Toronto Render I made, with a few slight revisions from the last one, and lots of extra towers added. (Or finished off.) On this one the new towers are: One Bloor, Ice East & West, Harbour Plaza East & West, L Tower, Ernst & Young Tower, Casa II, U Condos I & II, 1 York, Karma, FIVE, Southcore Delta Hotel, Theatre Park, RCMI, Waterpark Place 3, Bisha Hotel, Southcore Bremner, Pinnacle on Adelaide, The Bond, Alto, Studio on Richmond, Quartz, Aura, X2, Chaz on Charles, Pace, Peter Street Condos, Picasso, Tableau, The Madison East & West, Spectra, Backstage, King Charlotte, The Mercer, The Yorkville Residences and 1000 Bay.
I also added these proposals that will be U/C soon or have a good chance of being built: Holt Renfrew Tower, 37 Yorkville A & B, 10 York, The Icon, 88 Scott, Casa 3 and E Condos South.

One more wave of construction like we have witnessed in the past decade, and Toronto will truly offer a big city experience for residents and outsiders alike.

Well done. I'm still hoping we'll get Oxford (4 towers), Mirvish-Gehry (3 towers), and 1 Yonge (7 towers) on top of all of these.

Ditto.

Good work Koops. I'm looking forward to seeing all this, and more, in real life once constructed.

Looking good. Only nit-pick would be that Mirvish likely wouldn't look that big from this vantage.

I might have made it slightly too tall. I tried to make it twice as tall as Theatre Park but had to guesstimate a bit because the bottom is hidden from view. I'll shorten it a bit next time.
