Is that the same building that had the city's first Subway in it, around that same time?

Not sure about the Subway, but I think you might be right. The Subway was where the placement agency is now.

Pretty close! Yes, Regina's first Subway was there in the fall of '90. (I used to work in the print shop right next door to it at that time.) The platic sub wrapper said: "8000 locations by 1995"

AVORD Tower: I remember there was a bank in the Victoria and Hamilton corner of the building. I believe it was Bank of Montreal. There was a men's wear store and a restaurant on the Hamilton Street side, and there was an Avis Rent-A-Car on the Victoria Avenue side with a ramp into an underground garage where their cars were parked.

GRENFELL Tower: IIRC there was both a Subway and a Robin's Donuts next door to each other.

SASK Power Building: CIBC was located on the corner of Victoria & Hamilton in the space now occupied by their Customer Service Centre.

Former CIBC Building on Hamilton & 12th: I know it is not street level but the Marigold Restaurant was located in the basement.

re: Avord, I don't remember a restaurant but the men's store was Hunt's. There also was a barber shop off the lobby. I can't find any old photos, but it still looks OK given that it is coming up on 50 years old.

Yeah, the old girl is looking good! About 8-some-odd years ago, the Avord Tower underwent an external refurbishing. When it was complete, she looked brand new. ( . . and still looks great.)

The City Hall could use the same treatment as well for she is 40 years old this year.

I remember the barber shop off the lobby now. My dad would take me to get a haircut there. Thanks for bringing that back to my memory Stormer.

Cool photo. I've always loved the fact the initial U of R buildings and Wascana Centre's Master Plan were designed by Minoru Yamasaki, who designed NYC's WTC Twin Towers. I believe it was his only work in Canada too.

The "Historical Regina" thread has been combined with the " Regina I remember thread".

One place and thread for discussing Regina's Past and History.

Foundation and structure-permitting, I would bet that adding floors atop Avord Tower would be 'relatively' easy.

I would be interesting to hear an engineer's take on that.

The first step to ensuring failure is that you'd have to have a vacant building to do it.

I guess it would depend on if expansion was originally incorporated into the plans like the Motherwell Building or the Sheraton (now Ramada)
