Yeah, I suppose the tidal effects of the North Sea give it that brackish appearance.

What an amazing city. It's not hard to see why it remains an alpha world city. And I love the new towers going up including the Shard. They make the city look even more epic to see so many layers of architecture over time.

I agree Austinlee, London is starting to build a bit of a repertoire of fancy 21st century highrise buildings to add to the mix of all its older classic architecture. It's great.

London's Highest Observation Deck: Views from The Shard

Quote:
The Shard has been the tallest building in the European Union since its inauguration in 2012. The Renzo Piano-designed pyramidal tower is aptly named, as its sculpted glass shape creates a distinct silhouette on the London skyline. Its multiple building uses — residences, offices, and a hotel — are spread across 72 habitable floors. As the city's tallest building, it affords some of the best views of London.

I read a book, not too long ago, called History of Coal, and I recall, at its worst, if you swam into the Thames, you'd emerge with a black film on your body! And, during its worst coal-using period, the buildings were blackened as well.

It wasn't until the worst inversion that took place in the mid-50's, where visibility was reduced to 11 inches, and 4,000 people died, they finally started their crackdown on coal usage.

I oftentimes wonder how on earth they finally cleaned up all those old buildings, to remove the black!

I haven't been to London since 1982, and it's nice to see the changes! Thanks for all the uploads!

That kind of dark pellicle of dirt is actually persistent, requiring frequent maintenance to the façades along the streets. There will always be dust, but today, it's widely caused by the automotive gas emissions. It's been something hellish to the Paris urban fabric too.

And it's a frightening thing to think that the same goes to your lungs from the simple fact of breathing. Pollution like that causes heart attacks, cerebrovascular accidents and lung cancers, and a huge cost to health care insurances (hence mainly to tax payers over here).

That's why I can't wait for 100% electric vehicles everywhere. Sure if there wasn't any influential and harmful oil and gas lobbying, cars would be all electric already. We've had the required technology for quite some time yet.
