Platt's Popcorn Palace on the corner of Main and Fifth Streets (on the site of what would become the Rosslyn Hotel), circa 1903.

USC Digital Library

The turreted building in the background is the Hotel Alcazar/Hotel Butler. It's visible in this elevated view posted by MichaelRyerson in 2012.

Zooming in, the Popcorn Palace is still there!

Detail of picture at USC Digital Library

The 1911 Baist map (below) shows that the Hotel Alcazar/Hotel Butler became the Hotel Royal. It's still called the Hotel Royal on the 1921 map.

More pictures of the Hotel Alcazar can be found in Flyingwedge's post below (which includes images posted by Beaudry):

Mini Puzzle

Where did I take this photo from?

If no one guesses it in the next few hours, will post another view from the same location.

Nice try, but...

Before I post a more obvious clue, any other guesses?

Yes! It was the top floor of the Capitol Building. Here are a few other shots from that visit.

This building is "a thing of beauty which is a joy for ever" (quoting John Keats). I don't know what you think pals, but to me it is the perfect blend of classical and modern. It's height is quite balanced too !

Up On The Roof.....1930s

Rooftop gym at the Roosevelt Building, circa 1930s.

Today the building is a collection of renovated modern apartments.

The 1915 CD lists a saloon belonging to Thos Mack at 862 S Main, which would put it on the south-east corner. I haven't found any pictures of the building yet, but here's the 1914 Baist map of the intersection:

I like the blueprint as mural.

Hi David. It was fun seeing your pics from the top of the Capitol Records Building.
That's a pretty rare vantage point.

I have never heard of malt tonic. As you know, I prefer the Atomic Radium Water.

Stone wasn't the only actor of note with connections to Wilton Place. Carole Lombard (born Jane Alice Peters in 1908) lived for much of the 1920s and as late as 1930 with her mother and two older brothers at 138 North Wilton Place; we know this from U.S. Census records (http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/81610.html). She left by 1931 to marry William Powell.

Here's a Google Earth view of that address from a few years back, and there's a good chance it's the house where the Peters family lived when Carole was making her way in the industry: http://vp19.livejournal.com/pics/catalog/341/1431346

Other addresses for Lombard can be found at http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/457875.html. (Incidentally, I'm the administrator of Carole & Co., a site I've run for nearly seven years -- and I'm pleased to say it appears that within the next few months, I'll be relocating to Los Angeles for film history research.)

Gold Line bound for East Los Angeles

A Gold Line train bound for East Los Angeles crosses the 1st Street Bridge over the Los Angeles River on a Wednesday afternoon. Art Deco Sears tower in background, Signal Hill on the horizon. Nice shot of the L. A. River bridges.
