Katz Group sets sights on downtown Edmonton residential towers

By Kendra Slugoski
Global News

The Katz Group is looking ahead to its second phase of development of Edmonton’s Ice District: the land north of the Rogers Place arena.

If approved, the development of Phase 2 would include building on a section of land between 105 and 106 Avenues and 102 to 104 Streets.

Zoning by the city would still have to be approved before the plan moves forward, but the Katz Group is going ahead with collecting feedback from people already living in the area.

Glen Scott, senior vice president of real estate with the Katz Group, said Tuesday’s open house will give residents and businesses a chance to voice their opinions.

“It’s conceptual at the moment,” Scott said, but added the next construction phase would compliment what has already been erected downtown...

Overall very ambitious and a game changer for Edmonton in many ways, but also multiple realities and concerns to deal with.

Where Credit is Due

Every time I tell the Edmonton story, from Hangzhou to Helsinki, from roundtables of 10 to audiences of 1100, people are fascinated how we evolved the Edmonton brand and engaged our whole community in the process. They ask, “How did you guys do it? How did Edmonton manage its way through the recession so well? How did you evolve the brand in such a short period of time? How did you grab the attention of the media? How did you rise so fast in the rankings?”

Every time I’m asked, I stop and give pause, and I share an important story that seems to be forgotten – a story that gives credit to those who took the risk to fundamentally change the face of our city.

Five years ago, our city was at an impasse. City Council was divided over whether a downtown arena would generate the economic benefits that were being claimed, and Edmontonians were divided as to whether a partnership with Daryl Katz could be trusted and whether it would be in the best interest of our city.

EDMONTON’S DOWNTOWN OF 2019 IS NEARLY UNRECOGNIZABLE TO ITS DOWNTOWN OF 2011.

EDMONTON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

JANUARY 18, 2019

It started with a conversation about hockey, a popular topic in this city. With their old arena aging, Edmonton’s professional team and their ownership group were looking for a new place to play.

The idea to build a new arena venue soon spawned another, bolder vision: use the new arena as the anchor for a transformational downtown development and renewal project. This project, which came to be known as Edmonton’s ICE District, was built on-time and under budget with the participation of many levels of business and community leaders.

A mastery of public-private partnership and cooperative city building, the ICE District revitalization effort showcased one of Edmonton’s very best qualities: our city’s rare ability to work collaboratively together to accomplish big, important things in incommensurately small amounts of time.
