Maybe they should use those millions they saved on airport construction from the pandemic to build a tram/train in the tunnel. There is certainly a demand among the hoi polloi already.

That IS already the plan, but I think it'll only open once the 3rd north concourse is built... The central tunnel I think will be walking/moving walkway while they just have the current north concourse open, but they'll probably working on the tram so that it's ready once the 3rd is done.

There was an article a week or so ago that mentioned the tram and the 3rd concourse. In it they stated that the 3rd concourse is expected to start construction within a few years after the existing airport work is completed.

The goal, I think, is to have the third concourse completed between 2026 and 2028.

While I think the plan for the 3rd concourse was based on pre-covid travel numbers, I can see air travel and growth rebounding in the next year or 2. If growth returns to what it was the few years leading up to 2020, I can see a push for the 3rd concourse to happen by 2024 to 2025.

I am fairly certain that the designs are complete for the 3rd concourse and about 50% complete for the 4th concourse, which isn't slated to be needed until 2034 or 2035.

I think that's a tad optimistic. We'll be lucky to see the A and B concourses built out by 2024, IMO.

I could see a C concourse by 2034.

If we get the Olympics in 2030 they'll push up the timeline I'm sure.

Though a lot of articles recently seem to be suggesting SLC will wind up targeting 2034 Winter Olympics instead. So who knows.

I hope Salt Lake gets it! I do worry about date drift. I remember on this message board (circa 2003) talking about a serious bid for 2022. Then 2030. Now 2034...

It always feels like the bid is 15-20 years out of reach, and slides along with time.

While I would like to see it as soon as possible I can understand why they would want to hold off until 2034. Either way, I think SLC will be a sure bet for 2034, and it would seem like the Sapporo / Salt Lake City dates will be set soon. It's pretty apparent to most of the sporting communtiy now that Salt Lake City is probably the most uniquely qualified city in the world to host a Winter Olympics. Even if it's 2034, once the date is official SLC will be in for an increased pace of buildup from outside interests. As if the pace of build-up now wasn't already crazy enough.

Quote:
https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/...est-2030-games - While Utah's Olympic venues would be four years older and possibly in need of more renovations, bidding for 2034 could eliminate a potential financial challenge of competing with Los Angeles, which will host the 2028 Summer Olympics, he said.

"Back-to-back games is hard to pull off," Bullock said. "From two perspectives: What will the International Olympic Committee accept as opposed to rotating? And two, domestic sponsorship dollars. How many dollars are there to go around?"

Bullock said he doesn't know how long it will take for the committee to decide on whether it wants to bid for 2030 or 2034, but said there is pressure to get it done as soon as possible this year because the IOC seems to be ready to move quickly on choosing future host cities.

The reason 2030 might be out is because Los Angeles has the 2028 Summer games, and having two US cities so close together creates difficulties for sponsorships, etc. There was actually talk of needing SLC to step in as emergency host in 2026 for awhile.

With 2018 in South Korea, 2021 in Toyko and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the IOC may want to take a break from Asia. We're in the running against Japan and Spain/France for 2030... That may break in our favor with 2026 in Europe already. But who knows. They announce the 2030 host in 2 years.

It's still really hard for me to watch the demolition of the old airport. As a kid growing up in the late-80s/90s, the pre-9/11 SLC International was one of my favorite places.

Went to 100% of all out-of-town relative airport pickups— all the way to the gate every time. Sometimes my Dad would take me 30 minutes early just to watch planes. Sometimes we went just to watch planes, honestly.

So it's sad to see it go, even if it's for a greater good. The new airport is a wonderful place for Utah to have.

I fly in and out of the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) about once a week. Every time I am driving up and approaching the drop-off area, I can’t help but think that an enclosed glass type ceiling should’ve been part of the original plans. The airports in Portland (PDX) and Atlanta (ATL) have perfect examples of what I think would look great for SLC.

Delta will be resuming two routes from SLC. Both will be fly be operated by Delta Connection carrier SkyWest. One daily flight to Moab (CNY) resumes May 5, and two daily flights to Durango, CO (DRO) resumes May 12. Both flown on a 50-seater CRJ-200 aircraft.

I hope Delta brings back the nonstop flight from SLC to Santa Barbara. I personally flew that route a couple times a month. It was super nice having the nonstop compared to now flying Alaska or United and having to connect.

That's gotta be a lot nicer than having to connect through Burbank or LAX.
