Tunnel Proposed Under Strait of Gibraltar

The British government is studying the completion of an undersea tunnel between Gibraltar and Tangier, Morocco in partnership with the Moroccan government. This project would replace the one between Spain and Morocco that has failed to make any real progress. The project could be a floating suspension bridge, bridge on fixed pillars, or a supported tunnel on the seabed. If this project is built, it will be an engineering marvel like the Chunnel between England and France and hopefully, the tunnel will be built. https://thearabweekly.com/british-mo...-africa-europe

Yeah, right. Gibraltar voted 96% anti-Brexit. Spain claims Gibraltar. There's a hard border between Gibralter and Spain.

Why would the UK sink megabillions into a bridge or tunnel for a random walled-off territory? Especially one where it isn't even clear if the residents want to remain?

yeah seems like the extra costs of going through Gibraltar don't make much sense, only to cause traffic jams at the border control?

for maximum pain, they can build the tunnel between Ceuta and Gibraltar.

Hellllll no. will never happen. Not with millions of africans (yes millions.. tens of millions, actually. Dont forget there are 1 billion people in africa, many of whom say they want to leave the continent. So even if only 1% try to, thats still 10M people on the move) walking on foot thousands of miles to get to the mediterranean and then somewhere around a thousand of them (many dont make it all the way to morocco) breaching the Spanish borders into Ceuta and Melilla every month or so. Not to mention those who attempt to get across by boat. The UK's decision to leave the EU was driven largely by europe's lethargic response to the migrant crisis, and they already spend huge amounts of money on security in gibraltar, so this proposal makes no sense at all unless morocco (which hasnt exactly had it easy either) solves it dispute with Western Sahara so that they can defend their border.

Its absolutely ridiculous that the article doesnt mention migrants even once, and im stunned that Boris Johnson, of all people, is even considering this project

Which kind of vehicles are planned to use this crossing? Cars or trains? In latter case one may not forget, that trains have great problems with gradients, so one should consider long ramps at both shores. As Gibraltar is small, one should consider a European terminus on Spain territory.
