NB has fully twinned the TCH through the whole province. 23 years later.

They will never twin the TCH through the whole province cause there isn't enough traffic on route 15 from aulac to the Confeseration Bridge.

Well, let's compromise then and announce that the twinning of the main TCH through NB is now complete....

Drove it twice. East on Nov. 4, and west on the 11th.

The "drive through province" is complete.

In reality though, it was a much improved drive out of/into Quebec. Even though Quebec still has quite a bit of work left to do to reach RDL.

Technically For Maritimers lately, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are all drive through provinces... New Brunswick is a forgotten province, it is one of the most beautiful provinces, people are missing out.

OK, so nearly a year ago I posted a plan on the Fredericton thread for a redone Route 7/Route 8 Interchange. My plan had issues and was forgotten. Now I present to you the redone plan, with a more intelligent design.

In conjunction with the Smythe Roundabout, my design features multilane roundabouts. Option A would leave the western half of the interchange untouched, with the primary intention to provide access to College Hill Rd, including the Hospital, UNB and STU. Option B creates two roundabouts, providing full access to the PMB from Prospect St. without going around the Mall, which improves traffic conditions and lessens the need for upgrades to Regent Street. It would also lessen the existing sound problems from excessive speed en route to the bridge.

Thoughts?

$409.5 million to be invested in roads, bridges, energy upgrades
19 December 2014

Media Contact(s)

Leah Fitzgerald or Anne Bull, media relations, 506-453-3030.

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget for 2015-16 will invest a total of $409.5 million in bridges, highways, buildings and equipment.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson made the announcement today while tabling the department’s capital estimates for the upcoming fiscal year in the legislative assembly.

“These estimates reflect our government’s commitment to invest in infrastructure renewal and help move New Brunswick forward,” Melanson said. “Our investments will boost our economy in the short-term, through immediate job creation, and in the long-term through the building of strategic infrastructure resources.”

The majority of capital funding will be invested in road and bridge maintenance and building upgrades to create jobs, improve safety and produce long-term savings.

Funding for provincially-designated highways in municipalities will increase by $16.2 million for a total of $25 million, the largest amount ever invested in provincially-designated highways in municipalities. The Vehicle Management Agency will see a budget increase of $4 million to support renewal of the province’s snow plow and school bus fleet.

The capital budget for the department breaks down as follows:

$78.7 million for bridges;

$214.4 million for highways;

$52 million for federal/provincial cost-sharing programs;

$25 million for provincially-designated highways in municipalities;

$25.4 million for public works and infrastructure; and

$14 million for the Vehicle Management Agency.

“In making these investments, we are following through with our commitment to maintain our infrastructure more effectively by fully implementing the asset management system using strategic, evidenced-based decisions,” Melanson said. “Asset management is a crucial tool to help us make sound, transparent and strategic decisions, while making much-needed infrastructure improvements.”

Several highway and bridge projects will be undertaken in 2015-16 including:

$20 million for continued work on the Route 11 Caraquet Bypass;

$19.2 million to begin twinning Route 11 from Route 15 to the Shediac River;

$5.4 million to complete upgrades to Route 17 in the Black Book area near St. Quentin;

$4.5 million for improvements and upgrades to Acadie-Amirault Street in Dieppe;

$1.8 million for improvements and upgrades to the Hanwell Road in Fredericton;

$6.5 million to continue the replacement of the Kouchibouguacis River Bridge in St. Louis-de-Kent;

$1.5 million to replace the Benjamin River Bridge No. 1 near Charlo;

$6 million for Phase 2 rehabilitation of the Centennial Bridge at Miramichi;

$4 million for final upgrades to the Nashwaak River Bridge No. 1 in Fredericton;

$4 million to start upgrades to the Southwest Miramichi Bridge in Doaktown; and

$4 million for upgrades to the Narrows Bridge on Route 695 in Cambridge Narrows.

The capital budget includes more than $10 million for energy retrofits and renewable energy initiatives for public buildings.

“These investments in our buildings will not only reduce operating costs, but will also stimulate the economy, provide ongoing local jobs and support greening by greatly reducing emissions,” Melanson said.

He said the new Strategic Infrastructure Initiative will be utilized by the department to support several projects which support job creation, improving safety and saving tax dollars in the long term.

Looks like they're only taking the twinning of 11 to Shediac River... that's not far.

They already committed to twinning as far as Bouctouche, and the plan is for Richibucto. The section to Shediac Bridge is the most important and expensive phase ($29 Mil out of 64 to Richibucto) due to interchange improvements.

I cackled @ the thought of Fredericton drivers successfully negotiating not one, but two multi-lane roundabouts. And then merging onto a highway.

I didn't think of that. I guess we should have everyone get used to the Smythe one first.

Wow, they even have the reconfigured 11/15 interchange at Shediac shown.

That was quick. I had no idea the Department of Transportation was that efficient!!!

Actually, the map shows the highway divided all the way to the Miramichi. Just goes to show what you can do with a $900M paving budget. If Brian had shown the same commitment to the new Moncton events centre, it would already be built!!....

It hasn't. If you look at the Map view instead of satellite mode, it only shows the twinning as a dotted line. It shows up by accident in satellite mode. On your screenshot you can still see the cloverleafs at the 11/134 interchange, even though those will be removed in the interchange redesign.

Looks like this thread will have to save the snarky comments about Gallant until later.

Just kidding. As soon as Gallant commits to (already committed) funding for the events centre, I'll stop with the snarky comments.

Yeah. Seriously though, the Route 11 project is going to be amazing. I just wish we could get a full Super 2 from Kouchibouguac to Miramichi. The Chatham Bypass is a start, but that leaves some concerns about speed entering a local area, and possible maintenance issues such as the the section of 15 after the Veteran's runs out.

This will be a amazing project for my area in Kent county and bring in much needed short term jobs. But what i would propost is a 5 cents a KM toll for tourist and 2.5 cents toll per KM on all four lane highways in the province. Tolls would be collected via cash or even EZpass lanes. But hope it gets finished.

How would it work at toll stations when it comes to identifying 'tourists'? Out of province plates? Sure looks great on our province if that's the case.

Out of province plates won't be huge on that section of Route 11, that's for sure. They'd be better off tolling the Veteran's, since it gets traffic to PEI and Parlee Beach.

Speaking of tolls...

This is maybe not great for the Fredericton-Moncton section, since they seem opposed to it, but maybe Brun-Way or Gateway Operations might get on the toll bus.

Tolls proposed for 8 sections of Nova Scotia's Highways

If I'm reading right, the Tolls would be used to pay for twinning those highways. It would also mean that there would be a 4 lane highway all the way to Sydney (other than the Canso causeway) I think.
