It is really obvious St Louis is different from KC. Great job!

Something mesmerizing about old brick buildings, natural lighting that works for only brief moments, and memories of my childhood during the 1950s.

Beautiful stuff here. Thanks!

Beautiful. I'm happy to finally be moving home after 10 years "abroad". Can't wait to rehab an old brick beauty.

Love that winter lighting. Had fun guessing which neighborhood based on context clues in each picture.

Great work.

Great pics!

Those townhouses with a sloping roof and a single, narrow attic "dormer window", how old are they exactly? Architecturally, some of them at least look ~1820-1830 to me, and if so, I'm glad there are still several of those left!

Those are called flounder houses. While flounders can be found in a few cities in in the Midwest, Appalachia and mid-Atlantic, St. Louis has by far the largest collection in the country. Google it- lots of very interesting info about them.

Great tour, Centropolis!

gasm, i don't think he was asking about flounders (there's only one flounder pictured and it doesn't have a dormer). i think he was talking about these:

(Though I did google flounder houses, that's pretty unique! Can't believe I had never noticed that style in all my (brief) visits to STL!)

Anyone knows how old they are...? They must be getting closer to becoming bicentenarian...

the "old" city burned in 1849 -

wikipedia

and soulard appears mostly built out by 1875 on the compton and dry pictoral map: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/addIte...164sm+gpm00001))

so i'd peg the neighborhood and those structures between those two dates.

soulard is named for antoine soulard (and his wife julia soulard), a surveyor and escapee of the french revolution (he was an officer in the french army) who worked for the spanish government in french speaking st. louis. his wife went on to subdivide their land after his death and it developed as an early suburb of st. louis.

Great set. One of the best in awhile.

The city just needs to keep adding modern and current architecture to balance out the aesthetic.

Imagine how the whole city would look if it hadn't lost so much stock.

But even with those losses, St. Louis is doing good although more needs to be done to save deteriorating structures and housing stock.
