Can't speak authoritatively about arrival time in San Antonio. I've taken it numerous times to Dallas and back to Austin, however, and I can say you shouldn't expect it to leave here for San Antonio at 6:30PM. It is usually rather late. I've arrived (southbound from Dallas) anywhere from 7PM to around 11PM.

Wow.. I had planned to take it to Dallas at some point. Not with a 4-hour return window though.

Slightly, tiny bit, perhaps even insignificantly, minutely, almost unnoticably off topic

Use Megabus instead. Picks up from UT campus (by the Dobie building) and will take you express to downtown SA in 90 minutes. You can rent a bike there. Plus, they have service all day instead of just 1 time like Amtrak. And the tickets are super cheap, often $5 or below each way:

http://us.megabus.com/

They also run to Dallas and Houston. It's a great deal, too bad more people aren't using it. Once you get over the fact that it's a bus (albeit a nice one), their service is essentially what the LSR regional rail system would be. The travel times, destinations, and frequency are as good as the rail would be. The only difference is the capacity and stigma of riding a bus. But at least it's here now.

Uh, not really.

The travel times:
Megabus claims ~90 minutes. I'm not sure how often they actually hit that, and how often they get stuck in traffic (I've definitely spent longer than that stuck on I35).
The express LStar projects 75 minutes downtown to downtown.

destinations:
Megabus has only two, 20th St. in Austin and 4th in San Antonio (I'm not familiar enough with San Antonio to judge if that end is truly downtown or not).
LStar plans stops in San Marcos and New Braunfels even on the express runs, and ~16 stops otherwise.

frequency:
From the Megabus web site, it looks like 12 runs (6 each way) tomorrow. 32 for the LStar.

Though I agree it has the advantages of already being available, and not costing major $ to build.
But if the train has a bar car, I think the advantage will tilt back over there.

The only downside is that the skyline views aren't as striking as it showed in the renderings. LOL I'm being so picky.

Those are the sections east of I-35. The section west of I-35 in front of Joe's Crab Shack should be really good.

What Kevin said. East of 35, the tall trees block a lot of the skyline view, but the angle should be better west of 35. I bet there will also be some nice skyline views east of 35 on the ground sections that are raised a bit.

Ok, wait. This boardwalk is going all the way to S Congress, right? For whatever reason I kept getting the impression that it would only get to I-35. Ok... never mind my previous comment!

^If you check the 4th post of this thread there are maps showing the segments. The first segment starts just west of the mouth of Bouldin Creek.

Its goes between land and water throughout. Basically, much of the land is private property and it was way easier to just build around them on the water then trying to buy each parcel of land. So you have the boardwalk during those sections then back onto ground for land either the city owns or to connect existing parks.

It's going to be interesting to see what critters & beasts take up residence under the boardwalk once it is covered.

Too low for bats, but not for rats or snakes.

Are there really snakes in this part of town? I've never heard of snakes in Austin. How dangerous can they be?
