Maybe it was all of the hype, 'best city this', 'most livable that', 'omg the alleys'... but it was just ok.
I had a local tour as well as a tourist tour and certainly enjoyed my time there, but it was not the experience that I expected that it would be.
That said, i'd happily return.

Oddly enough, my first time on a 380. Impressive.

I uh...I don't know what you expected in there, but, I don't say Melbourne is just OK.
I visited Melbourne in 2009...was it just OK in my mind? As I'm putting some deeper thoughts, I do NOT have much of memory from it, comparing with Sydney.
So you are right, Melbourne is just OK then.

I'd hit it.

Awesome photos man. Melbourne has amazing architecture. Every time I go, I'm surprised by the amount of construction compared to its slightly bigger brother Sydney.
Funny timing as I just arrived back in Chicago this evening after spending the last week in Melbourne. So many of your photos are now familiar to me. I really enjoyed my time there!

Sydney = Visit
Melbourne = Live
I was thinking the same thing after spending a week in Sydney followed by a week in Melbourne. For the typical tourist Sydney would be better because of its flashy tourist attractions like the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi, etc. Though for someone like me that loves to explore neighborhoods, I definitely enjoyed my time in Melbourne and can see how great it would be to live there (though I found the Sydney neighborhoods to be pretty good as well).
Nice pictures. I like those little corner hotels! And I like that row of houses where each one has its own name!
In Australia Hotels are what in North America we would call a bar or pub. I wondered why there were so manu hotels everywhere when I was there.

Yes nice pics, I would like to go back for longer next time. I kinda preferred Sydney, maybe cause I had more time there than I did in Melbourne. I didn't really have any expectations of the place, many times it felt like I was in Toronto.
Main - pub
2nd - cocktail bar/dance hall
3rd - hotel
4th - rooftop patio

of course the laneways and transit are nice and make it identifiably melbourne. and yeah some sea state/singapore type older housing and some deco, which is nice to have in the mix.
also, all the cbd development is impressive. i see a lot of cranes in a couple of those pics. on the downside maybe too many of the usual unmemorable commonwealthy apt bldg types.
i would definitely go on an australia visit as it seems easy to go see for most visitors. i was always interested in perth, the outback and darwin for reasons though. you can't do it all in one trip!
