Stockholm and Sweden had a record year last year. Especially when it came to homicides caused by guns.

However this year started of pretty normal, but has escalated a bit since may. Still way below last years total, especially in Stockholm which has had 18 less murders than last year. So great news in other words althought i dont get the impression that it will last long, until some of the laws are fixed..

Greater Stockholm (metro pop 1.9) so far 2018: 10 (this date in 2017: 28 or 23 if you exclude the terror attack)
Gothenburg city (pop 580 000): so far in 2018: 2 (this date in 2017: 4)
Malmö City (pop 328 000) so far in 2018: 7 (this date in 2017: 11)

Malmö has long been the "murder capital" per capita in Sweden (and probably Scandinavia as a whole) and had 3 people killed by gunfire yesterday.

The "drunken murders" and family tragedies usually involving knives etc seems to have been almost replaced by criminal gangs using guns and explosives towards eachother.

10 of those are from that van attack in April, but otherwise the rest would be about normal for this time of the year; and on track for 70-80 by end of year. Because of that though, I imagine this year will be a little higher than usual - probably in the 80-90 range.

For a Canadian city Toronto’s gun violence is pretty bad. 200 shootings with 258 victims so far this year

Toronto is at 50 after yet another brazen shooting in a very busy area of downtown during daylight hours left two men dead and a third woman injured. Local rapper Smoke Dawg was one of the men killed.

Will NYC, if continuing on the downward trajectory it has been on, reach a lower murder rate than Toronto this year?

at the halfway mark of the year, chicago through the end of june:

2018: 266
2017: 342
2016: 340

down ~22% from the previous two years.

i hope the tally will taper off through fall and early winter (as it often does).

it'd be a small victory to stay under 500 for the year, considering chicago was over 800 in 2016.

city murder rates

Good news for St. Louis a city of a little over 300,000 population. As of this morning total homicides for this year are only 93 down from 105 last year. Hope this trend continues.

If current trends continue both Toronto and Canada's capital city Ottawa might end up with per capita murder rates higher than NYC in 2018.
