Chicago - West of Western

They used to say HEY don't go West of Western. But you can go West of Western, for better or worse. The area still retains an air of unpretentiousness that has all but vanished East of Western, in my view.

Thanks, enjoyed the tour.

I remember driving down Western once, there was a lot of traffic but it flowed pretty good. I also believe the traffic signals were synchronized as stopping getting caught by a red light was seldom. There seemed to be a lot of truck traffic too, strange that I remember all of that.

LOL!

I too remember "don't go west of Western" from 20 years ago.

What a profoundly quaint notion these days, what with the Logan explosion.

I myself live west of Western (just barely, 2500W block), but I'm a bit further north (wilson-ish) of where these pics were shot.

Anyway, great shots of some wonderfully classic Chicago residential vernacular.

the OP can answer more specifically, but without knowing exactly where every single one of these shots was taken, from the ones that i can pick out, it generally looks like the far western section of the West Town community area, an area roughly bounded by division, western, chicago & california/sacramento.

the blue line runs diagonally just NE of this area, so depending on exactly where you are, there's a blue line station within a 0.5 - 2.0 mile walk. walkable for some, but more likely a bus to train transfer for most people. people in the far SW section would actually be a little closer to some green line stations, but you'd be going through some rougher areas of east garfield park (one of the most violence-prone neighborhoods in the city) to get to them.

Yes, that is correct, except some photos are closer to North Av than Division. But they are all between Western and California, if I remember correctly. The Western Metra stop is also a quick bus ride away
