We always transfer at EWR when flying to Logan from Narita. As far as major American airports go, EWR seems pretty good to me. I can see how it's not convenient for New Yorkers themselves, but for transfer flights it's fine.

Question is, would Newark be world class if it amalgamated most of its surrounding cities and suburbs?

Toronto is world class, unless you have a tiny list of world class cities.

a resounding no to this somewhat outlandish question.

Didn't say Toronto was or was not. I am not entirely sure Canada has cities that meet whatever criteria, but the cities I listed would be on everyone's lists (or should be).

But Toronto is light years closer to the moniker than Newark. To say otherwise is just not very bright, if you will pardon the pun.

It's not even the best city in Canada, imo. That title belongs to Montreal. I'm in love with that city. One of my favorite in the world. Most underrated on these forums.

you could argue that NY and northern NJ are actually two separate poles, with Newark the center of its own 3-4 million person agglamaration.

but nothing is world class about newark penn, or the down-market downtown, or the (until recently) complete lack of new construction...I have to say this is the silliest question ever posed on this site.

That doesn't make it any less world class.

It's not as world class as Jacksonville but it's still world class.

Calm down, that's obviously a joke (an inside joke on the board).

My most vivid memory of Newark (downtown, not airport) is going for a roadshow meeting at Prudential with a colleague, getting stuck at a red light, and having some guy try to sell us used suits off of a hotel garment rack that he was pushing down the street. My sense at the time was that basically summed it up.

Seriously, Newark is NOT world class. NYC is obviously the only factor giving it relevance here...

Newark has world class institutions like the Bada Bing!, Satriale's and Paulie Walnuts.

It's a NYC suburb, nothing wrong with that. It has a nice skyline for its size, and solid urban core. The rising NYC tide lifts all bedroom communities.

I'll say this about Newark though - the Ironbound section of Newark however is the New York metropolitan region's best kept secret. New Yorkers will never ever go there for any reason, but the Portuguese/Brazilian community is awesome. Some of the best food I've ever had at affordable prices too.

lol the ironbound is pretty well known in the metro area, at least among foodies and nyc people in newark for events and work.

also, besides brooklyn's botanic gardens, i go to the cherry blossom festival in branch brook park almost every year. that's another reason to go and something nice i think.

newark is definately on the radar and an enjoyable weekend option type destination for nyc residents -- as much as anything else is that far out if not more!

Newark is just part of New York city to all intents and purposes, that's why it attracts some big corporations, that's where a lot of its residents work. It's not a World Class city on its own but it's one part of a World Class metro city.
