It needs to have closed hours clearly stated and visible and ini needs to be fenced with locking gates - iron railing style as in Europe. Nothing wrong with fencing and locked gates. The last thing we need is the park to go to hell in hand basket months after opening.

I actually don't mind the gated greens of Europe, but I don't think we need that here to be honest.

I hope we don't - I was in Edinburgh a few months back staying off Queens Street and all the parks along the entire way are fenced and keyed and the kicker is only residents of the immediate area are provided keys. Which made the park a fortress. This was done because the homeless take them over and destroy them and for people's personal security.

You hope we dont't? Were you not just advocating gating this park?

Indeed I was ... but Cold doesn't think it will be a problem or needed. I simply deferred to that point of view. Do you hope there won't be a problem? or do anticipate there may or will be? What is your experience living downtown?

If it's well designed it will function fine.
If it's poorly designed it won't.
If it's monitored and patrolled it will function fine.
If it's ignored and left to be known as a free for all it won't.
My experience is that the devil is in the details and fencing and locking a public space is a absolute last resort where everything else you should have done wasn't.

Timely article.

Edmonton makes second attempt at child-friendly planning

ELISE STOLTE

Two new parks built and under construction in the downtown core will provide space for gardeners, outdoor coffee drinkers, even dog walkers.

But despite city council’s long-term push to attract more families downtown, the parks will not have play space for children. Even the public art selected for the new Alex Decoteau Park on 105 Street is adult oriented. It’s too tall to climb.

“It will be eye-catching, iconic … Playable wasn’t one of the criteria,” said Katherine Kerr of the Edmonton Arts Council, who hopes to sign a contract with the artist this week.

In Edmonton, it can seem like planners only think of children when they’re planning playgrounds. Downtown, space for kids just didn’t come up during the public open houses, say planners. But there’s a growing sense that more should be done — not just in parks but at farmers’ markets, in public squares and perhaps even transit centres.

Great news... wish they can buy out the Boston Pizza land, tear that shitty little building, and push the park up to Jasper.

What just struck me is that a conservation society is happy to let Alldritt purchase the "river valley parkland" (it's top of valley at best), if the City agrees to use the funds to purchase other parkland.

106 + 107 Street perhaps?

I like this plan, but not the full scope of it...

Using the middle of the BP block is a no brainer, but don't see pushing the park south to Jasper, or across 107 st as necessary. Surely having a new park next door would make those neighboring lots attractive for development?

As for 107 St, the article implies it will be closed.
