Nashville in November | Part 5 | Natchez Trace Pkwy & Columbia, TN

Natchez Trace Parkway

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile long, limited access National Scenic Byway which begins west of Nashville and ends in
Natchez, MS. The parkway follows an historic route between the Cumberland Plateau and the Mississippi River which was first
used by Native Americans and later by white settlers in the 1700's and 1800's. Construction of the parkway began in the 1930's.

.

.

The Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, located near the parkway's northern terminus, is the nation's first segmentally constructed
concrete arch bridge. Completed in 1994, it has a span of 1,648 feet and rises 155 feet above the valley below.

Garrison Creek Overlook, the first of many scenic overlooks along the parkway, is accessed by this trail:

Jackson Falls is accessible via a steep, but paved, trail. Despite all the rain that fell that weekend (especially earlier
that morning), the falls were merely a trickle of water when we visited.

Columbia, TN

Located 45 minutes south of Nasvhille, Columbia is the county seat of Maury County. First settled in 1808, the city was
incorporated in 1817 and is the self-proclaimed "Mule Capital of the World," a fact that is honored by the annual Mule Day
celebration which attracts over 200,000 visitors during 4 days each april.

This building is part of Columbia Academy, a private school located on 67 acres on the west side of town. The oldest buildings
on the campus date to the 1890's and were part of an arsenal and military post until 1904. The following year, the Columbia
Military Academy opened and remained in operation until Columbia Academy opened in 1979.

Some of the historic structures west of Downtown Columbia:

.

.

This is the James K. Polk Ancestral Home--the only remaining residence of the 11th U.S. President apart from the White House.
His father built this federal-style home in 1816 while Polk was attending the University of North Carolina. Upon graduation
in 1818, Polk returned to Columbia and lived here until he married in 1824.

.

.

Located next door to the Polk Home is a home built in 1820 known as The Sisters' House, so called because two of Polk's
married sisters lived here at different times.

Nice shots. I have only been to Columbia once and that was when my alternator failed while driving to Birmingham.

Beautiful country...
